Corley is on mark for Sedge

    Shirebrook Town 2, Liversedge 1

A scratch squad represented Liversedge at Shirebrook Town in the final fixture of their Northern Counties East Premier Division season yesterday.

Despite a positive display, the young charges could not prevent the home side taking all three points.

It made no difference to Sedge's fourth-place finish but the loss did prevent the Clayborners breaking the 70-point barrier for the season.

It was a game of few chances, and the deadlock was not broken until midway through the second half.

Having taken the lead, Shirebrook doubled their advantage from the penalty spot after a trip by Danny Cooper ten minutes from time.

Sedge got what was to prove a consolation goal with five minutes to go. It started with a long clearance, Kieran Corley springing the offside trap and racing through to score.

"It was a typical end-of-season game, like a training session really," said Sedge secretary Bryan Oakes.

"We had five of the Academy side in the team. The goal-scorer Kieran was one of them and they all looked comfortable at this level. The most composed was Liam Roach, who played at centre back.

"We had a couple missing through injury, a few more because of unavailability, including skipper Darryl Leach whose wife had a baby on Thursday, and some off playing cricket.

"That's what its like at this time of year but we can't fault the lads. They have done well for the club this season and we have been at the top end of the table throughout the campaign."
