Newton tries to block end-of-season feel
The celebrations from the President's Cup win are fresh in the memory, as is the rhetoric from players and management alike that it would not mark the end of Liversedge's season - but reality bites.
Sedge know they will not be considered for promotion to the UniBond League because of ground-grading criteria.
Yet they re-iterated their desire to finish runners-up behind champions Winterton Rangers, who also cannot gain promotion.
"The lads have been very positive but I got the impression there was an end-of-season feel about last weekend's game," admitted Sedge boss Steve Newton, despite seeing his side beat Long Eaton United 3-0.
"It could have been more really. I think if there had been anything resting on the game, our lads were capable of ripping into Long Eaton. I tried to get them geed up at half-time but it was looking like the match was already won by then.
"A lot of our players have cup finals and title-challenging games for their Sunday League sides and I can't blame them for having one eye on that. They play the game to be winners and get medals and pick up trophies.
"We know it doesn't matter what we do in our remaining games and, as much as you want to win every time you go out on the pitch, that end-of-season mentality is bound to creep in.
"That should take nothing away from what we have achieved or what Winterton have done by winning the league.
"You have to take your hat off to them and I have been chuffed to bits with my squad, which includes the youngsters we have introduced along the way."
