THE last hope of any silverware for Thackley this season was snuffed out as they were beaten at home in a League Cup tie by a club from the lower division in the Toolstation Northern Countries East League set-up.

The Dennyboys were hoping to have a run in the competition to build momentum as they look to climb the Premier Division table.

They had home advantage in last night's second-round tie as they hosted Division One outfit Swallownest but the visitors opened up a 2-0 lead before the break and held on to it.

A quickfire brace from Richie Williams did the damage as he broke the deadlock in the 27th minute and doubled the lead two minutes later.

Swallownest are newcomers to the NCE League and are lower mid-table in Division One but they defended well and celebrated their victory over Thackley, who are one of the league's founder members.

The visitors' win at Dennyfield earned them a home tie against fellow second-tier side Dronfield Town in the third round next Tuesday.

Tonight's action sees mid-table LIVERSEDGE making the trip to third-bottom Harrogate Railway Athletic for a Premier Division fixture.

GUISELEY were due to play last night, at home against Gateshead in the National League, but their match was postponed just before lunchtime following a pitch inspection.

The surface at Nethermoor was still frost-bound following the bitterly cold weekend and sub-zero temperatures on Monday night into yesterday morning. A new date for the game is yet to be confirmed.
