LIVERSEDGE battled to earn a slender 1-0 home victory that guarantees them top tier football next season.

They completed their quest for survival in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division with a game to spare after Vaughan Redford’s late strike sent third-placed Cleethorpes Town home with nothing.

It was a tough afternoon for Sedge against a side that boss Jonathon Rimmington had declared were the best side they faced all season.

Following a goalless first half Sedge had to ride the storm in the second period before Redford netted his winner in the 86th minute.

Sedge still have one remaining fixture, away at Retford United on Tuesday, but neighbouring rivals THACKLEY have finished their campaign. The Dennyboys needed two late strikes to come from a goal down at home against Brigg Town

Brigg’s joint manager Paul Grimes slotted in a 14th minute penalty to give the strugglers hope of catching Sedge.

But the home side were awarded a penalty two minutes from time, Thomas Dugdale scored from the spot before Liam Hudson netted the Dennyboys’ last minute winner to confirm Brigg’s relegation to Division One.
