The big Toolstation Northern Counties East League local derby at Dennyfield was one of the casualties as the severe wet spell caused problems at non-league level and above.

Thackley were due to host neighbours Brighouse Town but the Premier Division game was shelved after the pitch failed an 11.15am inspection.

It was no great surprise after the persistent rain earlier in the week. The committee and volunteers at Thackley had been working hard on the surface but to no avail.

Dennyboys spokesman Mick Lode had said during the week: “We hope to get the pitch sorted but it will be difficult if the rain continues.

“Our first team was away last week but the reserves’ game was called off and Bradford City Ladies on the Sunday.

“With the way both us and Brighouse play, we need a good pitch to get a good game of football.”

Liversedge were due to host Worksop Parramore in the same division but Sedge chairman Steve Newton knew the game was in doubt.

“I was at the ground last Wednesday and the pitch was very soft when I walked on it,” he said.

“I could see the water on the surface shimmering later on when the lights were on for the training session.”
