Liversedge chairman Steve Newton has added experience to the young management set-up at Clayborn and he expects the remainder of the campaign to be a huge learning curve for coaches and players.

Club captain James Riordan has been player-manager, assisted by Dave Thompson, since Sedge parted ways with former boss Eric Gilchrist last October.

Newton drafted Alan Calhoun in to work alongside the pair and feels the new man has already made an impact.

Newton said: “I have known Alan for a long time and I asked him to join us to help James and Dave. I felt we were lacking experience but he has come in and, with his contacts, will be bringing in one or two players.

“With Dave on the touchline and James playing, I felt Dave needed someone with him who could have an input with tactics and substitutions. You could see a difference right away.

“Alan has loads of experience in this division and non-league in general. He was Nostell manager and got them into this league and promoted and they won the League Cup with him.

“He was also here as a player many years ago so he has an affinity with the club.”

With a young squad and a new management structure, the consistency has not been there for Sedge this term. The club is averaging just one point per game but are almost guaranteed safety so there is no great urgency, which should allow them time to build.

Newton said: “The hope is that this three-man management team will settle in and the young kids in the team will gain experience for next season.

“I’m looking below us and I see one (club) on five points and another on seven so there are no concerns at the moment.”
