Three out of three in FA Vase
All three of the local clubs with first qualifying-round ties in the FA Vase won through on Saturday.
Arguably the best result was Liversedge’s 3-0 victory at Esh Winning. Sedge have not had a good start to their league campaign and were trounced 6-0 in the north east in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup.
They put those setbacks behind them at the weekend. Gibril Bojang netted a 22nd-minute penalty and added a second goal on the half-hour, with Billy Grogan completing the scoring in the second half.
Joining Sedge in the next round will be Albion Sports and Thackley after they also triumphed on the road.
Karl Hall and David Brown gave Albion a 2-0 lead at Alnwick Town but the hosts hit back through a James Stansfield own goal and a Liam Armstrong strike on the stroke of half-time. Albion controlled the second half and Hall’s second booked them their passage.
Thackley went behind at Whitehaven but the Dennyboys went into the break on level terms thanks to Mike Garrod’s strike two minutes before the interval.
Garrod netted again in the 83rd minute and even the dismissal of Matty Hall, who was handed a straight red card for a reaction to a foul, late on could not detract from Thackley’s deserved victory.
