THE late resignation of Ovenden West Riding from the West Riding County Amateur League necessitated a rapid revision of the fixture list.

Pairings for the start of the new campaign, which begins today, had already been circulated but Ovenden's departure from the Taylor's Timber Premier Division made them redundant.

The loss of Ovenden came as a major blow to the league, who were looking to build up the numbers of eligible teams to strengthen their 'Step Seven' status.

With Campion having stepped up to the Northern Counties East League, the County Amateur set-up have – under FA National League System regulations – allowed them to keep their reserve side in the top flight.

Honley, who finished fourth in Division One last season, have now moved up to take Ovenden's place, with Route One Rovers switching from Division Two to replace Honley.

Ovenden, who had been with the league since the 1981-82 season, cited the loss of quality players over the past few seasons to teams at a higher level as the reason for their withdrawal.

Their exit follows on from last season, when Premier Division duo Bay Athletic and Storthes Hall also pulled out of the league prior to the start.

Meanwhile, Salts – who finished fifth in the top flight last season – kick off this term with a home game against runners-up Lepton Highlanders, while Steeton and Campion travel to promoted sides Overthorpe SC and DRAM Community respectively.

In Division One, Hunsworth entertain newcomers Churwell Lions at East Bierley, with Tyersal hoping to bounce back from their relegation by winning their opener at Wakefield City.

Thornton United, who gained promotion in their first season in the league, start their second by hosting Ventus-Yeadon Celtic.

West Horton, who should have been playing Honley, will now face Route One Rovers at Myra Shay.
