FARSLEY Celtic Juniors upset the apple cart in some style by defeating visitors Askern 5-0 in the third round of the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup, with even goalkeeper Jordan Wright scoring.

The former semi-professional side from Doncaster, who are sixth in the Central Midlands League Northern Division and were beaten by Thackley in their only FA Vase appearance in their only FA Vase appearance in 2010-11, were understrength, fielding several of their under-19 players.

However, it was a brilliant display by Farsley against a club who made their FA Cup debut this season, with the hosts defending well in a goalless first half with the wind blowing from corner to corner.

Juniors were without their skipper Craig Farrand but took the lead in the 50th minute via Steve Wells, who was promoted from the second team after scoring 34 goals in 11 matches.

Danny Lyons – the first team's leading scorer – added goals in the 65th and 70th minutes to put Farsley in control, but their fourth goal was bizarre, with goalkeeper Wright's clearance bouncing once and sailing over the head of the Askern keeper and into the net.

Lyons then put the icing on the cake by jinking past the keeper to complete his hat-trick and seal a last-16 match at 2013 winners Rimington or Knaresborough Town.

While there was delight for Farsley Celtic Juniors, there was heartbreak for Stanningley Old Boys, who drew 1-1 at home to Brighouse Old Boys but lost 9-8 in the penalty shoot-out.

Stanningley, missing several stalwarts, took the lead via Tom Stewart, only for Brighouse to equalise in the 35th minute.

In the end, a tame penalty miss at the end-of-match lottery put out the the home side.

Mind you, Brighouse winning a shoot-out shouldn't have been that surprising as that is how they put out Alwoodley the previous week in round two – the second week in succession that Alwoodley had gone out on penalties.

Few games in the Yorkshire Amateur League survived either but Old Batelians' 2-1 victory at Leeds Medics & Dentists Reserves in the Championship Division was notable.

It was the first time that the leaders have lost this season, with the visitors taking the lead against the wind in the first half with a deflected shot that wrong-footed the Medics keeper.

However, Johnny McGahan equalised in the second half before Joe Armitage got the winner directly from the third of three consecutive corners.

Batelians' hearts were in their mouths late on though when the ball hit a hand of one of their defenders in the area and the referee blew his whistle. However, it was to signal full-time, rather than a penalty!

Drighlington Reserves' mid-table Division Five match at Shire Academics Thirds was uninspiring, mainly because of the appalling conditions, but it was decided in Shire's favour with a late Matt Scullion goal.

There was no victory for Shire Academics Fourths, however, as they went down 3-2 at home to St Bede's AFC Reserves in Division Six.

Danny Walker put Shire ahead in the first half, with Antony Garner notching his ninth league goal to level before half-time.

Bede's flattered to deceive when Chris Bottomley put them 2-1 ahead but Connor Carr restored parity before a very late own goal gave Bede's the three points they felt they deserved.
