THERE was an irony about St Bede's facing Colton Athletic in the first round of the Yorkshire Old Boys' Shield, bearing in mind that they met a fortnightly previously in Yorkshire Amateur League Division One when they could have faced a team from much further afield.

St Bede's won the league match 7-2 and followed it up with a 3-2 triumph in the Shield to book a tie at Wortley or Morley Town, with Athletic's improved display owing much to their new keeper.

All the goals came in the first half, with Jordan Northin and Nathan Bailey overturning a 1-0 deficit for Bede's.

Athletic then made it 2-2 before Jamal Nash converted a penalty to give the Bradford side victory, but not before Colton had laid siege to their goal in the second half, hitting the woodwork four times.

In Division One, Grangefield Old Boys Reserves, inspired by Nick Smith, are up to second after becoming the first side to take a point off leaders Drighlington.

Tom Farron, normally their keeper, and Sam Thorpe put Drig 2-0 in front only for Dan Cuff and Grant Jackson to level matters.

Joe Hirst put slightly weakened visitors Drig in front again but Jackson's super strike from 25 yards salvaged a draw.

Gary Trewhitt equalised for home side Calverley United in their 2-1 defeat to Amaranth but it was two points lost as United twice hit a post early in the match and brought the best out of Amaranth's keeper in the second half.

Gildersome Spurs' Old Boys derby with Morley Town Reserves was abandoned after 15 minutes when Spurs' Adam Cater broke a leg, and Morley Town's secretary spoke for everyone when he said: "It's not a nice feeling when one of your best mates goes down reeling in agony after sustaining an unfortunate injury like Adam Cater did.

"Everybody at Morley Town AFC wishes him a speedy recovery as the news has just filtered through that he has broken his fibula and tibia.

"I would just like to thank Johnny Chana, Ben Keedy, Andrew Scott, Lee Askam, Chris Dalby, Matt Smith, Ray Thrush and, especially, Darren Boote for stopping behind to comfort him until the ambulance eventually turned up."

Farsley Celtic Juniors have climbed to third on the back of a 4-1 win at Old Batelians Reserves, Steve Wells (2), Alex Reid and Alex Gyte being on target for Juniors, who draw level with Huddersfield YMCA and Gildersome Spurs.

Fairbank United's Division Three match against Middleton Park was switched to Bingley Road, and the hosts moved up to fifth after a 6-2 triumph.

Naveed Khan made an early goal for Raziq Khan to put United ahead, Middleton levelling after 35 minutes, but it wasn't until the 70th minute that Fairbank went ahead again via an opportunist goal by Shoaib Hussain.

Raziq Ali soon made it 3-1 but Middleton scored again before Jumaid Ali, Naveed Khan and Shoaib Ali bagged late goals for United.

Trinity Old Boys Reserves won 7-1 at Drighlington Reserves in Division Five via Ben Finnerty (3), Kial McDonald (2), Curtis Bowles and Chris Quinlan but that was only their second victory of the season.

St Bede's Reserves trailed Shire Academics Fourths 2-1 at half-time in Division Six but bounced back to win 4-2, Lewis Searle (2), Chris Dring and Adam Vento.
