Salts can’t cash in on venue switch

Heavy rain again affected the West Riding County Amateur League programme, with almost a third of the scheduled weekend games being postponed.

This included Steeton’s semi-final against Oxenhope Recreation in the Keighley Cup, which has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 30.

Campion’s visit to Hall Green United in the Premier Division was another big match to fall by the wayside.

Salts should have been visiting Storthes Hall but, after the ground in Huddersfield was declared waterlogged, the game was switched to Saltaire.

The move did not do any favours to Salts, who could have moved ahead of Ovenden West Riding into second place with a win.

They had Danny Lynes and Karl Berry on target but Storthes Hall edged a 3-2 victory thanks to goals from James Buckley, Alex Slack and Mick Hall.

Tyersal climbed to fifth after first-half strikes by Alan Morley junior and Nick Cowling earned a 2-1 win at struggling Littletown, who replied through Joe Jagger.

Overthorpe stay rooted to the foot of the table after losing 6-1 at home to Kirkburton, who eased their own fears at the bottom as a result.

There was a shock in Division One as leaders Hunsworth lost 2-1 at relegation-threatened Wibsey.

Hunsworth had surged to the summit on the back of a tremendous nine-match winning run after losing three of their opening four league games.

But they were brought down to earth by a Wibsey side who have continued to struggle since losing their Premier status at the end of last season.

Ryan Templeton had edged Hunsworth into an interval advantage but Wibsey raised their game to hit back through Mick Burke and Dave Halley.

Halifax Irish boosted their chances of moving into the promotion frame with a 6-1 thrashing of bottom side Storthes Hall Reserves.

Scott Eastwood and Jordan Coduri netted twice apiece to add to strikes by Connor Ashworth and Gareth Sherwood, with Joe Fox hitting the visitors’ consolation.

Campion Reserves slipped into the bottom three after losing 2-1 at home to Westbrook YMCA, who had been level on points at the start of play.

Louis Etienne equalised for Campion after Chris Baxter had opened the scoring but Andy Wells popped up to snatch the winner.

Bucking the trend of postponements, all six games due to be played in Division Two went ahead as planned.

Bay Athletic Reserves stay top after winning 4-2 at West Horton and moved seven points clear after second-placed Steeton Reserves could only draw 3-3 at second-bottom Tingley Athletic Reserves.

Dudley Hill Rangers dented third-placed Hall Green United Reserves’ promotion hopes 2-0 courtesy of two Ryan Starr goals.

And Tyersal Reserves moved of the foot of the table after overturning a 4-1 deficit early in the second half to beat fellow strugglers Lower Hopton Reserves 5-4. Ateek Hussain (2), Len Worby, Dave Scott and Maddy Gassama scoring the decisive goals for Tyersal.
