CALVERLEY United may have thought that their chances of victory had disappeared when Thornton United equalised in the dying embers of normal time in their Bradford & District FA Saturday Challenge Cup second-round tie.

The Leeds club had led 3-2 after trailing 2-1, goals coming from Simon McQuiston (2) and Tom Westerman.

However, they won the subsequent penalty shoot-out 5-3 after Thornton blazed one penalty over and had another brilliantly saved.

Two sides who were well beaten were St Bede's Reserves (8-2 by Salts' Craven League reserve side) and Athletico, who lost a Bradford derby 9-2 against Wibsey.

There seemed every chance that Idle would join St Bede's Reserves and Athletico on the discard pile as they trailed hosts Salts' West Riding County Amateur League first team 4-1 at half-time in a match that was shown live on Facebook.

However, the break allowed Idle to regroup and they took the game to Salts, dominating possession, moving the ball quickly and working through the opposition defence.

Superb passing play in midfield and clinical finishing helped Idle draw level through a composed finish from Jack Strudwick, and Adam Medley scored the winning fifth goal with a curling finish, sparking wild celebrations.

Other scorers for Idle, whose man of the match was Carl Dawson, were Tom Simonett (2) and Strudwick.

St Bede's' first team trailed 1-0 in their derby at Manningham Allstars and also missed a penalty and hit a post.

However, skipper Derry Myers put them level before half-time with a drilled shot that went in off a post, and that is how it remained, despite Bede's creating the better chances in the second half.

Sam Marshall, Nathan Hurtault, Ian Horrocks, Tawheed Ahmed and Myers all found the net for Bede's in the penalty shoot-out, while  Manningham could only convert three.

Drighlington, leaders of the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division, started their defence of the Heavy Woollen & District FA's Wheatley Cup in style with a 6-1 home victory over Gawthorpe.

Drig led 5-0 at half-time before their intensity disappeared, goals coming from Harvey Booth (2), Andy Punton (2), Sam Thorpe and Ryan Rhodes.

Gildersome Spurs had six players absent in Germany, including their keeper, and therefore did well to only lose 2-0 at Hartshead.

In the Premier Division, Grangefield Old Boys drew 1-1 at home to St Nicholas after dominating the opening 15 minutes but going behind to a penalty.

Two excellent saves by Tom Needham prevented Grangefield from going further behind before Shane Gaunt netted an equaliser at the bear post after good work by the returning Chris Cairns and Ritchie Banks.

Grangefield had plenty of chances to win the game in the second half, including Banks failing to score from two yards in what has been called "possibly the worst miss ever seen in amateur football" as St Nicks picked up their first point of the season to climb off the bottom.

A tighter defence and a free-flowing attack are paying dividends for Farsley Celtic Juniors in Division One, and they beat visitors Sky Blue 6-1, courtesy of Brad Sharrocks (2), Karl Morris, Steve Wells, Joe Firth and substitute Danny Kemp.

In Division Two, Fairbank United were happy to get a point after a 2-2 draw at Trinity Old Boys.

Hassan Iqbal put United ahead with a free-kick, but after that the Old Boys dominated, with Akeel Khan clearing off the line before Trinity equalised ten minutes before half-time.

Naveed Khan's left-foot cross put Fairbank ahead again before the interval, only for Trinity to score a well-worked equaliser early in the second half.

Tyersal lost 2-1 at home to Garforth Crusaders on a windy afternoon on a rain-soaked pitch, going ahead via Wayne Wright after 15 minutes, only to go down to a Liam Chesney Hart brace, the second of which came in the 88th minute.

In Division Four, Prospect won 9-3 at Beeston Juniors Reserves, thanks to Jordan Farrell (2), Robert Cook, Joshua Ludford, Kingsley Rowe-Depass, Stephen Thwaites and Thomas Ware, while Gildersome Spurs Old Boys Reserves put seven past Thornesians Reserves without reply, the goals coming from Lucas Scott (4), Ben Barstow, Matt Massie and Ash Daly.
