ST BEDE'S, suffering from a shortage of players, went down 8-2 at home to Thorne Colliery in the first round of the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup.

However, their man man, Tawheed Ahmed, put them ahead after showing great feet and striking home a brilliant left-footed finish.

Sam Thorpe made it 2-1, and leading scorer Shane Sowden, who was only available from the start of the second half, bagged the third.

Alwoodley, who remain third, led visitors Farsley Celtic Juniors 2-0 at half-time, but the revival began when Louis Surtees was lunged at by Tom McKenna for a stonewall penalty, which Surtees converted.

An own goal from a dangerous Joe Firth free-kick levelled matters, and Juniors got the rub of the green with ten minutes left when Danny Lyons' shot was ruled to have gone over the line.

The much-improved visitors then had a goal disallowed before Callum Armstrong, who had put Alwoodley 2-0 ahead, had a penalty saved by Jordan Wright, whose careless throw out was punished by Graham Shaw for the home side's first goal.

However, Shoaib Hussain equalised early in the second half and United went ahead when Irfan Khan scored on the counter-attack after Hussain had carried the ball 40 yards.

Khan then turned provider with ten minutes left, squaring the ball across the six-yard box for Arsalan Ramzan to score.

There was a battle of new boys in Division Four when Calverley United Reserves met Gildersome Spurs Old Boys.

Cavan Garside's 25-yard rocket put fourth-placed United ahead in the first half, and they sealed the deal via Danny Soolton's sinewy run in the second half.
