DESPITE a serious head injury to Joel Binns, Tyersal's home first-round tie against Calverley United proved a great contest in the Bradford & District FA Saturday Cup.

Tyersal led 2-0, only for United's Josh Debenham to reply before the break.

United's Joel Binns was the unlucky player to be injured, being unconscious for nine minutes in a 35-minute suspension of play while he was treated.

Debenham made it 2-2 in the 80th minute, and United ended up triumphing 11-10 in the penalty shoot-out.

Best news of all. however, was that Binns recovered well.

Fairbank United's tie at home to Salts Reserves could have ended very differently.

United lost 4-2 but dominated the first half for extended periods and should have gone in with more than a 1-1 scoreline after Raziq Ali netted on the half-hour with an excellent turn and shot to give them the lead.

Fairbank were also in charge in the second period but Raziq missed a free header from six yards out on the hour, and Salts capitalised to lead 4-1 before Shoaib Hussain netted a consolation goal.

Old foes from the Spen Valley League met at Idle, with the free-flowing hosts beating Girlington 11-0.

Another mismatch was St Bede's at home to Tyersal, with the old boys winning 10-0 in a clash between tier two and tier seven of the West Yorkshire League.

Premier Division Athletico – another side who were in the Spen Valley League last season – broke their duck for the campaign with a 4-2 victory at fellow newcomers Prospect. Athetico led the tie 4-0, courtesy of Mohammed Qasim (2), Shamraz Hussain and Hassan Khan.

However, Prospect scored twice in three minutes early in the second half via Adam Shefta and D Softley but were unable to get any closer.

Gildersome Spurs Old Boys won 3-1 at Fox & Hounds Batley thanks to Aidy McCormack, Ben Keedy and Jonny Hunt.

In the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division, defending champions Farsley Celtic Juniors thought that they deserved a draw at home to Drighlington but ended up losing 5-4, despite hitting the post and bar twice each.

Farsley's manager Barry Thirsk said: "Basic defending went out of the window, especially for Farsley, with some class finishing from Drighlington centre forward Shane Sowden. Farsley had much more possession than Drighlington and many more chances."

Celtic's scorers were Paul Dockerty, Said Osman, Chad Morris and, returning from injury, last season's Golden Boot winner Danny Lyons.

The other scorer for Drig was Sam Thorpe (2).

In Division One, the legendary Rob Bordman netted twice and had three assists in Old Batelians' 5-1 home win over Farsley Celtic Juniors' Reserves.
