FARSLEY Celtic Juniors, who have had key players injured at vital times of the season, have retained their Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division title.

Risking resting players with minor knocks ahead of tomorrow night's Terry Marflitt Trophy semi-final against Leeds Medics & Dentists at Liversedge FC (7.30), Celtic clinched the silverware with a 2-0 victory at already-relegated Trinity Old Boys.

The players who came in did really well, including 17-year-old 'Loz' Patterson, who opened the scoring.

The second goal came late in the game, Louis Surtees scoring from 40 yards when Trinity were committed to all-out attack.

Celtic Juniors, who were unbeaten at home, have the second-best defence, the best attack and the division's leading scorer in Danny Lyons, were also indebted to the shrewd father-and-son management duo of Barry and Adam Thirsk, who is a quality coach.

Now Juniors want to repeat their league and cup double of last season, with the Marflitt final, Medics permitting, on the horizon at Bradford Park Avenue on Wednesday, May 3 (7.30).

Marflitt Cup finalists Farnley Sports, beaten 3-0 in their last two outings, triumphed 3-0 at Grangefield Old Boys, who, despite being second from bottom, had won their last three matches.

Also in the pipeline for Sports is the Old Boys' Shield final against St Mary's Yarm at Leeds University's Weetwood complex on Saturday, May 13.

Drighlington, runaway winners of the Championship Division, reached the 50-point mark with a 1-0 home victory over Mount St Mary's, who were pushing strongly for promotion themselves before winning only one of their last five matches.

Fourth-placed St Mary's, who are now only outside bets to go up, only travelled with 11 players but pushed the hosts hard until tiring in the final 15 minutes and conceding a stunning own goal.

St Bede's, whose star turn was Sam Marshall, finished their Division One programme with a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield YMCA but can still be promoted, depending on other results.

YMCA bossed the opening half-hour and went ahead, but, despite winning second balls and creating excellent chances in the second half, it took Bede's until five minutes before the end for Gary Sunderland to equalise.

In Division Three, Fairbank United won 7-0 at Leeds Medics & Dentists Fourths and have been promoted, although East Ardsley Wanderers are champions.

Medics have done well at home this season but couldn't cope with Mahmadu Dambe (5) and Shoaib Hussain (2).

With two matches left, Dambe needs three goals to overtake Leeds Modernians' Hugo Sach for the Golden Boot award.

United, meanwhile, need six goals for their 100.
