DRIGHLINGTON lacked drive and purpose in only drawing 2-2 against Championship Division rivals Shire Academics in the Yorkshire Amateur League.

With Drighlington's ground being unfit, the match was switched to Shire's ground, which was in better health but far from perfect.

Sam Thorpe and Shane Sowden, with what manager Bob Greenwood called a sublime goal, twice had Drig ahead but they had to settle for a point after Academics converted a disputed penalty.

The draw kept Drig in third as they climbed above Morley Town, whose game was called off, but were overtaken by Leeds Medics & Dentists Reserves, who cannot be promoted anyway.

In Division One, Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves led 4-2 at home to Dewsbury Rangers Reserves.

However, the Celts then missed a penalty, had two players sent off and ended up hanging on for a 4-4 draw in a battle of teams who are immediately above the drop zone.

Celtic, behind in the first minute, led 2-1 at half-time after replies from Joe Firth and Danny Kemp inside the first ten minutes but perhaps should have scored more.

Rangers levelled but the hosts seemed in charge when Louis Surtees and Matty Ingham netted before the penalty miss.

The visitors netted a spot-kick of their own before the first Farsley player was dismissed for dissent – and a third successful Rangers penalty levelled the scores again.

A second Celts player was then sent off but Rangers missed a glorious chance to win it at the death.

At the other end of the table, St Bede's drew level with leaders Gildersome Spurs Old Boys after a 5-4 home victory over next-to-bottom Rothwell.

The hosts, playing on the 3G pitch at Southfield Grange School for the first time, were reduced to ten men after 15 minutes and then fell behind.

However, James Fennell equalised from Ty Akram's square ball and Bede's went ahead when a Rothwell defender tackled Tawheed Ahmed and the ball ended up in the bottom corner of the net.

Sam Marshall hit the underside of the bar for the hosts before improving Rothwell levelled from a hotly-disputed penalty and went in front midway through the first half.

Fennell's strike from a narrow angle made the interval score 3-3, before Ahmed and Gareth Peltier put the home side in charge in the second half prior to a Rothwell goal from 40 yards making the closing stages more interesting.

Another game on an artificial pitch was Fairbank United's 9-1 home win against basement boys Headingley in Division Three.

The result was never in doubt as Irfan Khan, the returning Mahmadu Dambe (2) and Hussain Iqbal netted for United before half-time.

Headingley had several chances in the second half but United were deadly on the counter-attack, with further goals coming from Dambe (3) and Iqbal (2), with Dambe's fifth being from the spot after he was brought down.

Next week's clash between second-placed Fairbank and leaders East Ardsley Wanderers at Dixons Allerton Academy could well decide the title.

St Bede's Reserves finished their season with a 3-2 victory at bottom club North Leeds Reserves in Division Five, with the winner coming in the last minute to take them out of the bottom two.

Mick Duggan (2) and Carl Lomax netted for Bede's, who could well be overtaken by second-bottom Woodkirk Valley Reserves, who are a point behind with three matches in hand.

Mid-table Drighlington Reserves were on top form at second-placed Shire Academics Thirds, winning 4-1.

Tom Farrar and Noel Hynes bagged braces for Drig, who have an outside chance of promotion, although Horsforth St Margaret's Thirds are favourites to go up with Garforth Crusaders.
