ON AN afternoon when rain led to the postponement of five matches, Grangefield Old Boys were beaten 4-3 after extra-time in a Yorkshire Old Boys' Shield quarter-final.

A Shane Gaunt header gave visitors Farnley Sports a 4-3 victory after the teams had been level at 3-3 after 90 minutes in a quality tie that was well refereed by former Liversedge manager Eugene Lacy.

Tom 'Crouchy' Needham put Grangefield ahead after 20 minutes, following up a free-kick that the keeper tipped onto the bar, but Danny Purcell had levelled within five minutes after a defensive lapse.

Nick Smith then cashed in after a Farnley error from a free-kick, scoring from two yards out, but Farnley equalised two minutes before the interval.

Liam Copeland scored again to put the visitors ahead for the first time, beating the offside trap, but Smith then buried a penalty to level the scores again.

Gaunt's powerful near-post header then proved decisive in extra-time, booking a semi-final tie against Morley Town.

Alwoodley called on their second team to fill their bench at Drighlington in a delayed second-round tie on a pitch that cut up badly.

Yorkshire Amateur League Championship Division promotion favourites were expected to progress but lost 2-0, not causing the visitors any problems with their pretty triangles in midfield as Alwoodley booked a quarter-final against Beeston Juniors.

In the Premier Division, third-placed Farsley Celtic Juniors drew 1-1 at home to fourth-placed Ealandians, with Ben Wilson getting the equaliser for Juniors in the 40th minute.

Steve Wells, who has been re-signed by Calverley United from Farsley Celtic Juniors, made an instant impact with a hat-trick in their 4-1 Championship Division victory over visitors Wortley.

However, Wortley led 1-0 at half-time until Wells and Jordan Williams, who got the other goal, netted for a much more confident United in the second half.

Calverley remains eighth but have a six-point gap to second-from-bottom Thornesians, although Thornesians has four games in hand.

St Bede's dropped to third in Division One after a 4-1 home defeat against Gildersome Spurs Old Boys, although lightning quick Andy McHugh gave them the lead.

Gildersome netted in the 70th and 72nd minutes, adding two more in the final five minutes.

On target for the winners were skipper Mike Hall (2), Ben Keedy and James Wilby.

In Division Three, Fairbank United suffered their first defeat of the season, home side East Ardsley Wanderers winning 3-2 to join United on 29 points from 12 games, with Wanderers the new leaders with a plus 12 superior goal difference.

East Ardsley dominated the first half but were a goal down in the second minute after Shoaib Hussain was upended in the box, Bilal Saleem netting the resultant penalty.

Wanderers levelled with a 30-yard strike and took the lead ten minutes into the second half with anther well-taken finish.

United responded well, with Mahmadu Dambe equalising after good work by Hussain, but Wanderers got the winner with ten minutes left.

In Division Five, cellar dwellers St Bede's Reserves went down 8-1 at home to Woodkirk Valley Reserves, with Carl Lomax getting the consolation goal against visitors who climbed above North Leeds Reserves into third from bottom, leading them by a point with three games in hand.
