WYKE Wanderers progressed to the semi-finals of the Heavy Woollen & District FA's Wheatley Cup following a 2-0 win at Lower Hopton.

What a difference a week makes, with Wyke having lost their previous five games but defying the odds to defeat the West Riding County Amateur League top-flight outfit.

A change in formation and steely determination led to this Wyke victory in a full-blooded encounter.

Wanderers started brightly, with Matt Conway and Karl Fawcett leading the frontline, and their constant movement across the Hopton back four made life difficult for the home side.

Backed up by good midfield play and fine defensive work, Wyke took the lead through Fawcett's good finish.

Hopton tried to respond but Wanderers held firm and should also have had a penalty when Conway went tumbling but the appeals were waved away.

Yet Wyke's composure told and when Fawcett was brought down in the box, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, man of the match Fawcett picking himself up to score his second goal.

Hopton again rallied and won a penalty of their own but the spot-kick hit a post and Wanderers saw the game out, although both sides had chances.

Field Reserves moved up to to third in Alliance Division One after thrashing hosts Pool Reserves 8-0.

On target for Field were Glyn Hirst, Liam Lambert, Ryan Newton, James Penn, Tom Ponter, Christian Robinson and both substitutes Thomas Harrison and Jordan Laban.

Wyke Wanderers Reserves lost 6-0 against Huddersfield Amateur Reserves but the scoreline did not reflect the effort defender Joe Hebblewhite or his Wanderers team-mates put into the game.

Amateurs went ahead with a far-post header but Sam Ash was inches away from equalising before Amateurs made it 2-0.

Wanderers responded in the second half and when Ash crossed from the left, Hoi-Pin Truong slid in but the ball just eluded him.

A goal at that stage for Wyke could have changed the game but it was the Huddersfield side who struck again with a shot from 20 yards.

Wanderers continued to try and get back into the game and almost did when Truong, who was a constant threat, broke away but, under pressure, his attempted lob ended in the goalkeeper's arms.

After another fine move, a great cross found Joe Sagar, whose volley hit the underside of the bar and in the ensuing scramble, the Huddersfield defence hacked the ball clear.

By taking the game to Amateurs, it left gaps in the Wyke defence and they capitalised, getting their fourth goal. Wanderers kept at it but a harsh penalty gave Amateurs their fifth and they added another late on.

Wyke secretary Dave Ryan said: "We were better than the score suggests. We never gave up and attacked right up to the final whistle. There were some good performances, with Joe Hebblewhite and Declan O'Regan the best players for Wyke."
