FARSLEY Celtic Juniors paid a heavy price for missing simple chances as they bowed out of the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup 3-2.

After being dominated themselves in the opening 15 minutes, when Salts took a 1-0 lead, Celtic tweaked their system and also profited from Salts taking their foot off the gas.

Juniors also had a 15-minute spell when they were clearly on top, winning corner after corner before Alex Gyte equalised from one of them with an unstoppable 20-yard volley following a half-clearance.

Celtic, who missed a good opportunity when it was 1-1 in the first half, continued to boss midfield in the second but spurned a hatful of opportunities before Louis Surtees put them 2-1 ahead.

A near-identical concession from a free-kick near the right-hand touchline levelled matters again before Salts grabbed the winner with eight minutes left.

Drighlington, who believed they were on the wrong end of two decisions, also felt they were the better team in their 3-2 defeat at Littletown.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Shane Sowden and Brett Thompson edged Drig 2-1 ahead but they had two players dismissed while almost identical incidents concerning Littletown players only produced yellow cards. The hosts got the winner when they had a two-man advantage.

There was no luck either for Drighlington Reserves, who lost their third-round West Riding County FA Trophy tie 2-1 at West Yorkshire League Ilkley Town Reserves.

Ilkley deserved their 1-0 interval lead and made it 2-0 before a thunderous Danny Lakin free-kick halved the deficit.

Drighlington would have drawn or even won were it not for Ilkley's diminutive keeper, who made several top-drawer saves before clawing away a 20-yarder in the final minute that was destined for the top left-hand corner.

In the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division, there was a red-letter day for Grangefield Old Boys, who beat visitors Trinity Old Boys 5-1 to record their first league win of the season and climb from bottom to eighth.

Trinity, for whom this was a fifth straight defeat, are now next to bottom.

In the Championship Division, Calverley United are out of the bottom two after a 2-2 draw at leaders Collingham Old Boys.

Joel Binns and Neil Cooper put United 2-0 ahead in the first half but Collingham got their equaliser with five minutes remaining.

In Division One, Gildersome Spurs Old Boys are only two points behind front-runners Leeds Independent with three games in hand after a 6-2 victory at Old Batelians, with the winners' goals coming from Thomas Firth, Ben Keedy, Mike Hall, Max Elliott, Ryan Wilson and Jason Hardcastle.

St Bede's are fourth, level with Gildersome, after a 7-3 home triumph over next-to-bottom Grangefield Old Boys' Reserves.

Man of the match Nick Scullion (3), Richard Harris (2) and Brad Holland (2) were on target for Bede's, the latter netting from a gorgeous 25-yard free-kick.

The battle for second place in Division Two has intensified after Idle's 3-2 defeat at home to Colton Athletic.

Jack Strudwick, with a penalty and a tremendous free-kick, hauled Idle level at 2-2 but they also hit the woodwork four times, including from the last kick of the match, with Colton netting a 90th-minute winner.

In Division Three, Fairbank United had to dig deep to notch a 4-2 victory on a poor pitch at Shire Academics.

Shoaib Hussain and Mahmadu were in turn goal-scorer and provider as United went 2-0 in front before Mahmadu skilfully added a third.

Shire, the better team in the second half, then scored twice but were thwarted when Mahmadu completed his hat-trick at the far post from a Faris Hussain cross.
