'TWO OUT of three ain't bad' looks like being Bradford City's song for the summer after their A team pulled off a shock 4-2 West Riding Women's League Cup final victory over top Premier Division side Tingley Athletic at Ossett on Bank Holiday Monday.

The A team's success followed on the back of the first team's County Cup win over Leeds and the reserves' disappointing defeat in the FA Premier Division Reserve Cup final.

First Division City were the clear underdogs after a dip in league form, and they soon found themselves a goal down, but Vanessa Holroyd struck either side of half-time to give them the edge.

Tingley hit back to equalise but substitute Keavy Smith headed in an Ami Nolan corner with her first touch and Melissa Griffiths wrapped it up for City late in the game with a close-range finish. It was a great boost for the City third string as they turn their attention to their last-ditch promotion bid.

They take on champions Battyeford Belles at Apperley Bridge tomorrow and bottom club Oulton next week, needing six points to be sure of the runners-up spot. In the event of a draw with Battyeford, an 11-goal winning margin at Oulton would give them it on goal difference.

In the Premier Division, bottom club Bradford Park Avenue are still clinging on to survival hopes after a confident 3-0 win over Hepworth United with goals from debutant Emily McNulty, Sarah Huby and Annie Roberts. Avenue now take on Brayton Belles at Horsfall tomorrow and leaders Altofts next week, needing two points from those games to avoid the wooden spoon.

In the FA Premier Division, there was a disappointing 1-1 draw for the Bantams at home to relegation-threatened Nuneaton, Hannah Campbell scoring.

City bounced back strongly in midweek to beat Huddersfield Town 5-0, at Shepley, with a hat-trick from Campbell taking her tally to nine in the last six games, and two from Emma Elliott.

That win took City into joint fourth place and a win in their next game, at Blackburn next Wednesday, would see them leapfrog Rovers into third. The runners-up spot is still a mathematical, if unlikely, possibility.

Guiseley also find themselves in a two out of three situation after City's draw with Nuneaton as Loughborough's win over Newcastle United in their last game leaves just three points separating the Premier Division relegation candidates.

Their final game should have been at home to Newcastle on Wednesday but the postponement leaves Guiseley hoping Newcastle can get a win at Nuneaton tomorrow to keep survival hopes alive.
