WEST Yorkshire League Premier Division side Wyke Wanderers beat Division One basement outfit Thornhill 4-2 after extra-time in their Heavy Woollen District FA Wheatley Cup match.

The tie was switched to Appleton Academy 3G pitch to ensure the game was played and Wyke soon took control.

Indeed, they should have led early on but a combination of good Thornhill goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the score goalless.

Cameron Day had a fine game for Wyke and put his team in front with a tremendous 20-yard shot.

Several more chances went begging before the half-time break but, after the restart, Thornhill equalised and began to cause all sorts of problems for the Wanderers defence.

The visitors deservedly went into a 2-1 lead but Wyke reacted and Carlton Reid made a superb crossfield pass for Karl Fawcett to score with a header at the far post.

With the score now 2-2, the tie went into extra-time. Wyke went ahead with Day's second goal and victory was sealed when Fawcett completed a brace of his own.

Wyke secretary Dave Ryan said: "We made hard work of this cup tie which should have been wrapped up before half-time."

The Premier Division match between Field and Robin Hood Athletic was postponed due to the bad weather, as was the Division One game Boroughbridge v Baildon Trinity Athletic.

The Pool Reserves v Wyke Wanderers Reserves Alliance Division One game was also called off due to an unplayable pitch while Field Reserves did not have a scheduled match.
