WYKE Wanderers suffered a 4-1 defeat at Leeds City in the Premier Division.

Following a lengthy lay-off due to the bad weather, a game against one of the best sides in the league was going to be hard as Wyke discovered, with the hosts quickly getting into their stride.

Wanderers struggled to contain Leeds City, found themselves 1-0 behind after only six minutes and were lucky to go in at the half-time break only 2-0 down.

A bad defensive error early on in the second half put Leeds further ahead and they wrapped up the game with a fourth goal in the 51st minute.

Wyke heads did not go down and they enjoyed more of the ball and scored a consolation goal with a good header from James Stansfield.

Wyke Secretary Dave Ryan said: “The one positive thing to come out of the match was the debut of Jamie Underhand, who showed plenty of promise.”

Wyke Wanderers Reserves travelled to Brighouse Old Boys Reserves in the Alliance Division One and lost 3-1.

A good first half for Wyke saw Hoi-Pin Truong and Sibu Mayo causing problems to the Brighouse defence.

Truong saw his effort hitting a post and having a good penalty claim turned down.

Brighouse went 1-0 ahead with a good header from a free kick. Truong equalised after an hour but a lack of games recently showed as Wyke tired.

Wanderers conceded a second goal from a corner and Brighouse scored a third to kill off the game, while Sibu Mayo was voted man of the match for Wyke.

The West Riding County Challenge cup tie between Field and Heywood Irish Centre was cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch as was the Division One game between Sherburn White Rose and Baildon Trinity Athletic.

The persistent rain also saw the postponement of the Pool Reserves v Field Reserves Alliance Division One match.
