GRANGEFIELD Old Boys suffered a shock 4-3 defeat at the hands of Amaranth in the second round of the Marflitt Trophy.

The Old Boys have won the Yorkshire Amateur League competition for the past two seasons but Leeds-based Amaranth edged a thrilling tie and will travel to neighbours Wigton Moor in the next round.

Meanwhile, Premier Division leaders Farnley Sports beat bottom-placed Shire Academics 8-0 and now host St Bede's in the next round.

Farnley's goals came from a Shane Gaunt hat-trick, with Barrie Danby (2), Lee Ransom, Curt Lewis and Adam Butterworth also on target.

Division One outfit Drighlington lost 3-2 at home to Farsley Celtic Juniors in another entertaining clash.

James Sowden put Drig ahead early on when he outpaced the Farnley defence to fire into the top corner and give his side a deserved 1-0 lead.

For the final 20 minutes of the half, Farsley fashioned a period of sustained pressure which led to an equaliser for top scorer Danny Lyons.

Farsley carried their momentum into the second half and skipper Craig Farrand headed home at the far post before making the most of a chance from 30 yards after a poor clearance by the Drig keeper.

The visitors then sat back and Drighlington took advantage, with Farsley keeper Jordan Wright making a super save before being beaten by substitute Noel Hynes.

Farsley visit Horsforth St Margaret's in the next round, although Drighlington showed they can hold their own against most teams.

St Bede's claimed a thrilling 4-3 win over Morley Town AFC after establishing a 2-1 interval lead with strikes from Andrew Scullion and Mark Hayward.

Aron Johnson levelled matters only for Saints' leading scorer Jordan Northin to net twice to give his side what proved an unassailable lead.

Stanningley OB beat Gildersome Spurs OB 6-2 with strikes from James Allen (3), Andy Shields, Shane Thompson and Tom Stewart. Mike Hall bagged a brace for Spurs to make it 15 goals for the season.

In Division One, Calverley United beat Wheelwright OB 3-2 to climb to the top of the table.

Wheelwright OB led at the break thanks to goals from Daz Fothergill and Jimmy Waite but, in the second half, debutant Mark Waterhouse, skipper James Beaumont and Rob Nicholson all found the net in style.

Third-bottom Leeds Medics III played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with fourth-placed Grangefield OB Res.

Fergus Machin, Alex Feben and Nick Maxwell notched the Medics goals, with debutant Jack Hill netting twice for a much stronger and improved Grangefield and free-scoring Sam Russell adding their third.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves beat Old Collegians 3-1 to claim their seventh win from as many outings, while leaving their opponents with only two wins from seven matches.
