A SERIOUS knee injury to James Healy disrupted Wyke Wanderers in their opening game of the West Yorkshire League Premier Division campaign.

The hosts found themselves under early pressure in a feisty match at home to Knaresborough Town but gradually worked their way into the contest and should have scored via Karl Fawcett, only for the visitors to scramble the ball away.

Both sides had good chances in the 0-0 draw, which was a fair result, Wanderers keeper Ian Horrocks deflecting a shot on to a post.

However, both teams finished the match with ten men after a double dismissal following a midfield clash, Paolo Lewandowski getting his marching orders for Wyke.

Also in the Premier Division, Oxenhope Recreation went down 2-1 at home to Wakefield outfit Carlton Athletic. The visitors went ahead when Scott Nelson put through his own goal and they extended their lead before a Dan Moriarty penalty – after Leon Smith was brought down – pulled one back for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Baildon Trinity Athletic had a wake-up call in Division One, losing 5-0 at home to Aberford Albion, who took the lead in the first minute and were 3-0 ahead by half-time.

Baildon forwards Ben Craven and Lee Mathers missed chances to reduce the deficit and, with only one substitute, an injury forced Sean McVey off the field and Elliott Moody had to carry on playing even though he was also injured.

Trinity manager Carl Dalton said: "Will Hawksworth was our man of the match but he was closely followed by Simon Gelder on his debut.

"It was a hugely disappointing result, moreover a warning of things to come given that the opposition were a mid-table team last season."

Wyke Wanderers Reserves came away from Otley Town Reserves with a 1-1 draw in Alliance Division One in a tight contest.

Sam Digby opened the scoring for Wyke with a stunning individual goal, running from halfway before smashing the ball into the top corner.

But Wanderers gave away a penalty with five minutes to go, resulting in the equaliser.

There were impressive Wyke debuts by 16-year-olds Alex Whitson-Smith, Declan O'Regan and Jordan Richie, as well as Aiden Dyer.

In Alliance Division Two, Baildon Trinity Athletic Reserves had man of the match Harry Bates in form but he couldn't prevent his team losing 5-3 at Middleton Park Reserves.

Baildon started off brightly and went 1-0 ahead through John O'Connell but it didn't last long as Baildon's stand-in goalkeeper Andrew Radozevic let a tame header slip through his hands.

Darren Rands restored Baildon's lead when he smashed the ball into the top corner but the visitors only had 11 players and were reduced to ten through injury, Middleton racing into a 5-2 lead before Ben McKenzie pulled a goal back.
