PROMOTION-chasing Wyke Wanderers did not perform well but still notched a 2-1 home victory against Swillington Saints in Division One of the West Yorkshire League courtesy of a late goal.

Gavin Turner headed in an early corner from Ben Bodle to put Wyke 1-0 ahead but Swillington hit back five minutes later to leave the half-time score at 1-1.

Saints had the better of the second half but, with five minutes left, a corner whipped in by Aiden Day was handled by a Saints centre half to stop the ball from landing on James Stansfield's head.

Day sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot – but Wyke, who remain third, ended the match with ten men after Karl Fawcett received a second yellow card.

Baildon Trinity Athletic maintained third position, and a promotion place, in Division Two following their 2-0 win against Middleton Park.

The match was spoilt by a heavy wind and bobbly pitch but Baildon went ahead when experienced midfield general Danny Milner headed home unchallenged from a Sean McVey corner.

Andrew Radosevic had the chance to make the game safe for Baildon but his spot-kick was brilliantly saved. However, McVey ensured that all three points went to Baildon when he scored direct from a free-kick.

Athletic's defence of Lee Rands, Daniel Jowett, Elliot Moody and man of the match Lee Newall ensured a clean sheet.

Field played a stubborn Robin Hood Athletic in the third round of the League Cup but went through 3-0.

After a scoreless first half, Danny Cunningham netted his 41st goal of the season, Danny Illingworth added a second and Josh Milner put away a rebound from his own penalty.

Field assistant manager Barry Dunne said: "It was a tough game, even though Robin Hood had a player sent off after 35 minutes. Credit to them as they kept going right until the end."

Substitute Jack Webster was on target for Field Reserves in Alliance Division One but they suffered a 3-1 loss at Wetherby Athletic Reserves, while in Alliance Division Two, Baildon Trinity Athletic Reserves drew 2-2 at Pool Reserves.

Baildon should have been three goals ahead early on but finally went in front after 20 minutes when Steve Boult netted a fine volley from the edge of the penalty box.

Athletic continued to miss chance after chance and Pool equalised and then went ahead after a mix-up between defender and goalkeeper.

But just as the referee was about to blow for full-time, Baildon got a free-kick on the edge of the box and Darren Rands salvaged a point by curling the ball into the top corner.

In a game of few chances, Wyke Wanderers Reserves scored the only goal of the match at home to Ripon City Reserves.

Carlton Reid netted from a free-kick after an hour but Wyke goalkeeper Simon Fagan made a superb save near the end to ensure that his team rose to third.
