IT MAY have been Black Friday the day before – but Saturday was a red-letter day for Farsley Celtic Juniors.

Their 2-0 home victory over third-placed Huddersfield Amateur gave them the leadership of the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division for the first time.

It is a rapid succession for Celtic, who won the Supplementary Cup in their debut campaign and were promoted from Division One and Senior B divisions as champions in successive seasons.

Goals from Luke Gordon, in the first minute after he ran on to a long punt by the goalkeeper, and Craig Farrand in the 31st minute, with his left foot from a beautifully-struck free-kick, decided matters.

An injury to leading scorer Alex Gyte after 20 minutes did not help but 16-year-olds Joe Firth, who started the match, and Danny Kemp, who came on after 70 minutes, gave eye-catching displays.

Chris Ross, who had unhappy times recently at North East Leeds, cast aside any worries by scoring five as Grangefield Old Boys won 6-2 at second-bottom Rothwell to climb a place to second.

Ross netted in the fifth, ninth and 15th minutes, bagged another goal before half-time and finished his nap hand in the 57th minute, Luke Hunter completing Grangefield's scoring in the 86th minute.

However, Rhys Moore joined a long injury list after 20 minutes and was replaced by Kev Green, who enjoyed what was much more than a cameo role as the old boys are now only a point behind Farsley with two games in hand.

Fourth-placed Ealandians, who have won all their five games and are just a point behind Grangefield having played one match less, remain a real threat.

In the Championship Division, injury-ravaged Calverley United went down 2-1 at home to mid-table Shire Academics, making it six league defeats on the bounce as United are only three places above basement boys Beeston St Anthony's, who have four games in hand.

With the elements in their favour in the first half, Mark Freeman gave Shire an early lead but Calverley steadily improved and equalised courtesy of James Beaumont on the stroke of half-time.

Calverley Utd failed to make the most of their early second-half dominance and, as they tired, Freeman added his second goal.

Fourth-placed Stanningley Old Boys Reserves lost a thriller 3-2 at runaway leaders Farnley Sports, who have a 100 per cent record after seven matches.

Farnley had lost their previous five clashes against the old boys but, with Stanningley having elected to play up the slope first on a heavy pitch, Sports were 3-0 ahead by half-time, although their keeper Colin Cobley had to be alert.

Sports controlled the game in the second half but the contest had a nervy finale after two controversial goals for the second string's John Mallinson, the second from a penalty with three minutes left.

Stanningley then attacked en masse but failed to make any further impact.

Grangefield Old Boys Reserves remain third from bottom in Division One after a 1-0 home defeat to Old Centralians, who climbed to ninth and are four points ahead of their hosts having played two games less.

Grangefield built their attacks stylishly but lacked penetration where it mattered, with the Cents defence solid.

Despite goals for Jamal Nash (2) and Kyle McGuinnis, tenth-placed St Bede's were no match for rampant fourth-placed visitors Leeds Independent, who won 7-3.

Much hard work is needed at Bede's if they are to keep out of relegation trouble, with both Sandal Wanderers and Grangefield Old Boys Reserves putting on improved displays.

There was no better news for second-bottom St Bede's Reserves in Division Two as they went down 6-1 at Leeds Medics & Dentists, who doubled their goal tally for the season. Dom O'Sullivan provided a smidgen of solace for Bede's.

Leading scorer Phil Bryant (2), Dave Bordman and Damon Sandison were on target for sixth-placed Old Batelians Reserves, who won 4-1 at Methley United, Old Batelians' first and third teams having their matches rained off.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves are up to third in Division Three after a 3-1 home victory over rapidly-improving Almondburians Reserves.

Ben Gekonkge, after three minutes, and Tyler Cooper, in the 27th minute, put Farsley ahead but Cameron France had reduced the arrears to 2-1 by the break.

It was literally an uphill struggle for Farsley in the second half, especially after a nasty injury to Josh Sanz Carvell, but substitute Matthius Britton made the most of an early opportunity to make it 3-1.

Heckmondwike Grammar School Old Boys dropped from third to fourth after a 2-0 defeat at unbeaten leaders Old Centralians Reserves. The visitors were hampered by arriving late at the ground and never settled.
