BAINBRIDGE caused the shock of the day in the Yorkshire Amateur League's Marflitt Trophy preliminary round.

The Division Three side won 3-1 at Championship Division outfit Old Batelians, with Razzaq Ali bagging all three goals to delight manager Mohammed Shazad and earn a home tie with Thornesians.

Roger Teale got the Batelians goal – but they were not the only upset victims.

Bainbridge's league rivals Heckmondwike Grammar School Old Boys triumphed 3-1 at last season's Division Three champions Wheelwright Old Boys.

Will Moore's first goal for Wheelwright was a mere consolation as Heckmondwike were already three goals ahead via Dale Hanson (2) and Kristian Dransfield to book a tie against Amaranth Crossgates in the first-round proper.

Gildersome Spurs Old Boys led three times at Old Collegians during normal time or extra time but did not seal their win until Ash Brookes' spot-kick gave them a 5-4 penalty shoot-out verdict.

Open-play goals for Spurs came from James Wilby, Jordan Brereton, Conor Firth and Brookes.

Division Four side Leeds City Old Boys fought bravely against visitors Calverley United before succumbing 3-2 to an extra-time penalty by Tom Westerman.

He also netted from the edge of the area in the first half but it was Ian Blades who gave the experienced Old Boys a 2-1 half-time lead, with James Beaumont on target to level matters in the second half. Calverley host Beeston St Anthony's in round one.

Leeds City's league rivals Horsforth St Margarets kept in touch at Farnley Sports until half-time, when they were only trailing 1-0, only for Sports to add four goals in the second half.

Danny Sharpe (2), Adam Butterworth (2) and Andrew Punton were on target for Farnley, who meet Championship colleagues Beeston Old Boys next.

St Bede's were much improved at Sandal Wanderers before losing 5-3, Ross Jones, Brad Holland and Andrew Scullion netting for them, while Sandal's marksmen were Tom Hart (2), Karl Abbott (2) and John Murrell.

In the league, 100 per centers Grangefield Old Boys are up to third in the Premier Division following a 5-0 victory at Alwoodley, who are expected to be title candidates but only had two shots on target.

Andy Kenyon, with goals in the 70th and 78th minutes, Kev Brown, Grant Jackson and Ritchie Banks, in the 88th, scored for Grangefield as they kept pace with leaders Huddersfield Amateur and Ealandians.

Farsley Celtic Juniors, who won 11-0 at next-to-bottom FC Headingley, are fourth, the visitors taking advantage of the hosts having only ten men after an injury by adding to their 2-0 interval scoreline.

Alex Gyte (3), Craig Farrand (2), Danny Dalton (2), Andy Cooper, Paul Docherty, Luke Kitson and Luke Gordon were on target for the Juniors.

After their first team were routed, Alwoodley Reserves gained some measure of revenge with a 2-0 victory at pointless Grangefield Old Boys' Reserves in Division One and lead the table.

St Bede's Reserves, who are also without a victory, lost 8-1 at home to table-toppers Huddersfield Amateur Reserves in Division Two.

League newcomers Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves have begun the Division Three season brightly, their latest victory being by 7-0 at Modernians Reserves.

Louis Edmonds (30, 53 and 74 minutes), James Lowery (32), Ben Gekonge (48), Louis Surtees (56) and Danny Cannan (90) were the Juniors' marksmen.
