Most of the Grangefield Old Boys team were at the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.

But the rest of the first team were also 'at the races' in a footballing sense as they defeated visitors Old Modernians 6-0 in the Yorkshire Amateur League's Senior A Division

Three goals in each half gave Grangefield the points that keeps them second but Gildersome Spurs Old Boys still lead by six points, having played two games less.

Ritchie Banks was the Grangefield hero with goals in the seventh, ninth and 24th minutes, and he also got the last too.

Former Bardsey player Matty Dalton was the other Grangefield star with goals in the 80th and 81st minutes, the first from a 25-yard free-kick, and he also made three for Banks.

Unbeaten leaders Spurs soon took charge of their home match against Stanningley Old Boys, going 3-0 ahead early doors via a mazy dribble by Steve Wales, a cracking 30-yard drive by Lee Thrush and a second for Wales.

However, James Allen reduced the deficit with a goal either side of half-time but it proved a false dawn as substitute Matt Jackson and Mike Hall made it 5-2 before Allen completed his hat-trick.

Calverley United could afford a missed penalty as they push for a top-five place in the Senior B Division.

Jack McMurrough was the guilty party but he also scored, as did Matt Addy, in a 2-1 home victory over Thornesians, who replied late on via substitute Nick Bowen.

Headers from Gareth Rennard - a bullet - and Luke Harrop gave second-placed Stanningley Old Boys Reserves a 2-0 home victory over fifth-placed Farnley Sports.

Stanningley trail Farsley Celtic Juniors by four points, with both having played 17 matches. Celtic, who are guaranteed a top-four finish and promotion, beat visitors Beeston Old Boys 2-1.

However, Beeston belied their lowly position and dominated the early proceedings, missing three chances, before a change in formation gave James Kasher the opportunity to put Celtic ahead in the 22nd minute with an angled drive.

Luke Gordon made it 2-0 after a four-man move but Ryan Dawson replied, and Farsley had to withstand intense Beeston pressure to triumph, 16-year-old Joe Firth being Farsley's best player on his full debut.

St Bede's, who seem resigned to relegation, gave a lacklustre display in losing 3-1 at sixth-placed Shire Academics, Tahir Akram equalising for the basement side, with leading scorer Luke Croager, Rich Yates and Mark Freeman on target for Shire.

Gildersome Spurs Old Boys' Reserves warmed up for their Hancock Cup final at the end of the month with a 1-0 Division One victory at relegation-threatened Leeds Independent.

Joe Bedford netted in the second half for fourth-placed Spurs, who are someway adrift of the teams pushing for promotion. Meanwhile, Independent are two points above second-from-bottom FC Tadcaster, who have played a game less.

In contrast, Gildersome Spurs Old Boys' Thirds are back in the Division Two relegation zone after a 2-0 home defeat against third-placed Huddersfield YMCA.

But the first goal didn't come until the 70th minute via an Olly Dunne penalty, Matty Roberts doubling the lead with the last kick of the match.

Almondburians were not happy with a St Bede's Reserves' pitch that needed cutting and rolling beforehand.

And losing a 2-0 lead won't have improved their mood either after Adam Lightowlers and Peter Jowett had put them in charge.

They proceeded to miss enough first-half chances to make the game safe but Bede's Reserves have plenty of spirit these days, and in-form James Boyle bagged a brace to gain a 2-2 draw and move them up to eighth.

Second-placed Almondburians, who haven't lost since the first day of the season, are still in a strong positon for promotion, however, as they are five points ahead of their nearest rivals with seven matches left. St Bede's haven't lost in eight now.

Ninth-placed Grangefield Old Boys' Reserves pulled back from 3-1 down at half-time to go 4-3 behind at fifth-placed Woodkirk Valley - but that was as good as it got. In-form Marcus Benstead (2), Mark Pickersgill and skipper Ryan Hill were Valley's marksmen.

Calverley United were optimistic when they took the lead against visitors East Ardsley Wanderers, who had lost their last 14 matches in Division Three and were already relegated.

Warren Fox made a superb save in Wanderers' goal following a 65th-minute corner but Brian Davis followed up to put United ahead.

However, their joy didn't last long as a superb strike from the edge of the area by Phil Wooffitt restored parity in East Ardsley's best display of the season, the point damaging United's survival chances.

Jack Murphy and Scott Malloy (penalty) put eighth-placed Heckmondwike Grammar School Old Boys 2-0 ahead at home to Ealandians Reserves in the second half, but the second strings, inspired by goalkeeper Mick Dougan, hit back via Rik Mollet and Spencer Cahill for a 2-2 draw.
