Sam Frankland swaps sports but can’t inspire win
Bradford League cricketer Sam Frankland scored a penalty but could not prevent Grangefield Old Boys making it two wins from two at the start of the Yorkshire Amateur League season.
Grangefield triumphed 2-1 at Huddersfield Amateur but for the time being must settle for third place on goal difference behind fellow 100 per centers FC Headingley and Leeds Medics & Dentists in the Senior A division.
Grant Jackson’s second goal of the season earned an interval lead and although Woodlands batsman Frankland levelled matters from the spot, Grangefield regained the initiative and Kristian Dacre popped up with a later winner.
Mark Heseldin scored four times for promoted Old Batelians but finished on the losing side as visiting Alwoodley won 7-4, with Graham Shaw and Geoff Clarkson netting twice apiece.
Below-strength defending champions Gildersome Spurs OB had to call up three youngsters from their third team at Trinity OB but emerged with a 2-1 win thanks to goals by James Bradd and Mike Hall.
Yorkshire OB Shield finalists Stanningley and Ealandians renewed their acquaintance in what turned out to be a thrilling contest as it finished 4-4.
Stanningley were 4-1 up with ten minutes to go, John Mallinson scoring twice, but Ealandians produced a storming finish.
The only side in Senior B with maximum points from two games are Stanningley OB Reserves, who included five new younger players and were rewarded by a 6-0 success at Rodillian. Jack Kitson and Jimmy Harrop struck twice apiece.
The local derby between promoted duo Farsley Celtic Juniors and Farnley Sports finished all square at 1-1. Craig Farrand edged Farsley in front but Adam Butterworth converted a penalty equaliser.
Calverley United remain without a point after missing a late penalty as they lost 2-1 at Beeston, who were also aided by an own goal.
Wigton Moor outscored St Bedes 2-1 as Niall Temple and Danny Lyons struck before Jonathan Hicks replied.
