Guiseley exited two cup competitions on the same night as the saga of the on off FA Trophy first round tie at fellow Vanarama National League side Gateshead was finally resolved.

The game was scheduled for last Saturday and hastily rearranged for Tuesday, both dates being thwarted by the frost in the north east, before getting the go ahead on Wednesday.

That was the same night that the Lions had re-scheduled their West Riding County Cup quarter-final tie for, away at Tadcaster Albion, thinking that they would be free after the Trophy tie.

They had to send full squads to both venues with the strongest side heading to the International Stadium to take on Steve Watson’s Gateshead.

The Heed took a first half lead when Richard Peniket went on a strong run, dribbled past two defenders and lashed a shot into the bottom corner of Jonny Maxted’s net.

Paul Cox’s Lions were never out of the game and picked up a deserved equaliser just before the hour mark. A shot from Alex Purver was blocked but Rowan Liburd latched onto the rebound and slotted in from the edge of the six yard box.

The tie was that finely balanced that the score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes and both sides created chances in extra time. Scott Barrow had a great opportunity for the home side but Lions substitutes Mike Fondop and John Rooney both went close for the visitors.

Just as it seemed that it was destined for penalties the home side snatched the all important goal. A last gasp free kick was sent in by Barrow and Heed’s substitute Theo Vassell converted to send the home section of the sparse crowd home happy.

Guiseley’s second string were also beaten by the odd goal in three but all three goals in the County Cup tie at Tadcaster were scored in the first half.

Frank Mulhurn gave the Lions a fifth minute lead before Casey Stewart hit the Brewers’ equaliser in the 12th minute. It was Taddy’s former Farsley Celtic and Bradford Park Avenue striker Aiden Savory who netted the winner, just before the break.

Holders Farsley Celtic joined Tadcaster and Pontefract Collieries in the last four with a narrow 3-2 win at neighbours Campion.

The Celts boasted the higher league ranking, the Evo-Stik Premier Division outfit travelling to Toolstation Northern Counties East Division One outfit Campion. But the hosts made the most of home advantage and the derby factor to make it a tight game.

Campion led at the break after Leon Hurles-Brooks had broken the deadlock midway through the first half. The Celts had to be patient before Nathan Cartman finally produced a 75th minute equaliser.

Nathan Turner gave the Celts the lead just two minutes later but Danny Stocker levelled with less than two minutes remaining before Farsley skipper Danny Ellis bagged the winner just into stoppage time.
