Vanarama National League: Guiseley 0 Boreham Wood 0

GUISELEY manager Paul Cox had mixed emotions after their 0-0 draw against Boreham Wood in the Vanarama National League last night.

He said: “It was a bit of a strange game because we never really got going in the final third and - at home - we didn’t work their goalkeeper enough, but it’s a clean sheet and four points from the last two games.

"However, there is an awful lot we can get better at, but we are a club in transition.

“The players have put two good shifts in and done well against difficult opposition.

"Tonight’s game was one that Guiseley would have lost six or seven games ago.”

Boreham Wood were bidding to get back into the top seven but Guiseley, who won their first game under Cox at the weekend, gave a solidf display.

Bruno Andrade had the ball in Guiseley’s net after just four minutes but an offside flag curtailed any celebration.

The same player almost scored just before the quarter-hour when he hit a volley that was curling towards the top corner of Jonny Maxted’s net before the keeper saved it.

Lions centre back Ash Palmer almost broke the deadlock midway through the first half but the skipper’s header to a Lee Molyneux free-kick was just wide.

The visitors were good on the break but Maxted and his defence were solid, and the home side came close to opening the scoring just before the break.

Mike Fondop drilled the ball through the six-yard box but Rowan Liburd just failed to steer his attempt on target.

Molyneux was foiled by Woods’ keeper Grant Smith six minutes from time, and the sides had to settle for sharing the spoils.

Guiseley were in the relegation places on goal difference only going into the game but remain there and are now one point below Chester, who leapfrogged them and Barrow after a 3-2 win against the Bluebirds, netting a last-minute winner.

Farsley Celtic also settled for a point at home but they had to come from two goals down to rescue a 3-3 draw from the visit of Ashton United in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

The visitors had a dream start as Matt Chadwick’s early shot rifled into the top corner, and Jack Dyche then got behind the Celts defence and slotted the ball home, giving Ashton a two-goal lead inside ten minutes.

Farsley pulled a goal back soon after when Ben Atkinson netted a screamer into the top corner from outside the area, but they looked in deep trouble early in the second half when a foul in the area led to a penalty for the visitors that Chadwick fired past Gareme McKibbon.

Substitute Adam Priestley added Farsley’s second 11 minutes from time with a shot after a corner dropped inside the area, and James Walshaw netted the dramatic equaliser from the penalty spot after he had been fouled four minutes into stoppage time.
