NEWCOMERS Campion have taken to life on the non-league ladder like a duck to water, but manager James Bicknell has already seen enough to realise that his side needs to maintain their consistency.

Campion are top of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One and have rattled in 18 goals in a five-game unbeaten start to the season.

The boss is pleased with their opening after making the step up but is also wary.

Bicknell said: “We’ve done well and scored goals but we’ve also conceded a few.

“It was always going to a big step up and we’ve got a few new players bedding in as well, which always takes time.

"We’ve got a few players who have experience in the non-league game but a lot of lads who haven’t played at this level before so I think we’ve adapted very quickly.

“I think the other midweek (3-3 draw at home to Glasshoughton Welfare) there were maybe six out of the 16-man squad we had that Wednesday who had played at this level or above.”

Nobody at Scotchman Road, with the shiny new lights installed for the ground grading they needed for acceptance, is getting ahead of themselves.

They know just how far there is still to go this term.

“We all know that it’s early days,” said Bicknell.

“We’re not in the FA Cup or the FA Vase yet so we know we are going to have played a lot more league games than the rest at this stage, but that’s good for us, and if we can put a lot of points on the board then it’s up to the others to overtake us.

“We’re averaging just over two points per game, and if we can keep that up who knows where we might finish?

"There is a really good team spirit here and everyone is enjoying it and is up for the challenge.”
