Brighouse Town let two-goal lead slip in stalemate

Brighouse Town 2, Tadcaster Albion 2

A promising afternoon for Brighouse turned into something of a frustration at the Dual Seal Stadium.

Town trail visitors Tadcaster Albion in the Baris Northern Counties East League Premier Division table in what was a third fixture on the bounce against higher-placed clubs.

But just eight minutes into the second half, they opened up a 2-0 lead.

James Sutcliffe had broken the deadlock in the 39th minute with the only goal of the first half. That was a strike worth waiting for as he fired a 22-yard free-kick into the top corner.

Town’s second goal was also a stunner as Danny Nadiole went on a jinking run before netting a well-placed shot.

But the hosts held their two-goal lead for just five minutes as Steve Jess maintained the standard of strikes in the game with an inch-perfect volley from the corner of the area.

Tadcaster earned their draw just after the hour mark. Town keeper Ben Immeson did well to parry a shot but Nick Thompson nipped in to net as the ball came back off the post.

Brighouse spokesman and vice-chairman Ray McLaughlin said: “A lot of games were off but our pitch was fine because the sun was on it from early morning because we don’t have any big stands obscuring it.

“Both managers, the referee and all of the players were happy to play on it and, to be fair, it was a very good game. We did well to go 2-0 up but we can’t have any complaints about the result.

“Tadcaster scored a screamer very soon after we had doubled our lead and it just gave them a big lift at the right time.

“We couldn’t have done anything about their goals and they are a very good side, so a draw was probably about right.”
