WARRINGTON Town went back to the top of the Evo-Stik League Premier Division after a 4-2 victory over Farsley Celtic in a tight game.

The Celts were third going into the game against second-placed Warrington as two of the early pacesetters went head to head, but the Yellows edged both halves 2-1 and leapfrogged Shaw Lane, who dropped from first to fourth, still just one point and one place higher than Farsley.

The home side broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Tony Gray headed in Abou Sanogo’s cross.

The Yellows were in front for eight minutes before their skipper James McCarten fouled Celts’ captain James Walshaw in the area as a corner kick was whipped in.

Walshaw got up to drill the resulting penalty past keeper Tony McMillan but his side were still a goal down at the break after Connor Hughes netted in first-half stoppage time, Farsley keeper Graeme McKibbon getting a hand on the shot but just failing to keep it out.

The Yellows began the second half well, and Sanogo was denied by a post before Gray found some space in the 55th minute and fired in from the edge of the area.

A tense finish was set up when Farsley’s Paul Walker made it 3-2 with a neat finish after the visitors had won the ball back and counter-attacked.

The Celts pushed for an equaliser in the last 20 minutes but Warrington not only held on and put the gloss on their win when Sean Williams netted a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Brighouse Town lost 1-0 at home in Division One North but will be hoping to bounce back from that when they host Droylsden tomorrow night.

Town hosted Steve Kittrick’s Scarborough Athletic yesterday, and the Seadogs, who were above Vill Powell’s Town on goal difference only, hauled themselves up to eighth in the table.

The goal that separated the sides came in the 18th minute as Michael Coulson’s low free-kick took a deflection off the wall on its way in. The visitors ground out the three points after that.

Town dropped three places to 15th as they look to welcome Droylsden, who were held to a 3-3 draw at Kendal Town at the weekend but are a healthy third in the table.
