West Riding County Cup third round: Brighouse Town 1 Goole AFC 0

A SOLITARY goal ensured Brighouse Town’s progression in the West Riding County Cup on an eventful night at the Dual Seal Stadium.

The home side finished with ten men after Dan Illingworth picked up a second yellow card in the 70th minute, and Town boss Paul Quinn played the last 13 minutes plus stoppage time after he replaced Jack Stockdill.

The statistic that counted most from the hard-fought cup tie, however, was Tom Robinson’s finish from point-blank range following Tom Dugdale’s third-minute free-kick.

It was a dummy run for the league game between the sides as Town travel to Goole on Boxing Day.

Last night’s result means that Quinn’s men have a home tie in the quarter-finals when they will face either Harrogate Railway Athletic or Ossett Town, who play their third-round tie next Tuesday.

Brighouse’s Evo-Stik League rivals Farsley Celtic will be hoping to improve their placing in Division One North tonight as they make the short journey to Ossett Albion.

The Celts have been sidetracked by cup ties but after their adventure in the FA Trophy was ended by Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Vanarama National League club Southport.

Ten places separate Farsley from their hosts, who are a lowly 19th, but a victory over the Unicorns would see the Celts climb back to fifth.

Following the weekend’s loss to the Sandgrounders, the Celts’ joint manager Neil Parsley said: “It’s all about Tuesday now and picking up some points in the league.

“We have a couple of games in hand but we’ve got to get points on the board from these games because the league is our focus now.”

Attacking midfielder Jordan Deacey is back in contention after being sidelined at the weekend through illness.
