FARSLEY Celtic finally got back to winning ways in Evo-Stik Division One North when they ended a six-game run without a maximum by claiming a league double over Clitheroe with a 2-0 home victory.

There was an early yellow card for Celts centre back James Knowles as the home side’s defence was under pressure from the Blues.

However, the Celts broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Aiden Savory slotted in from close range after Paul Walker had put the chance on a plate for the striker.

There was also a first-half yellow card for midfielder Ross Daly in what was a close but tetchy match.

The visitors’ Sefton Gonzales clipped the bar and they had a strike ruled out after substitute Michael Hampson had tapped in from an offside position.

That chance arose following one of many good saves or blocks from Farsley keeper Tom Taylor, and Lewis Nightingale sealed victory in the 74th minute.

The defeat seriously dented sixth-placed Clitheroe’s chances of forcing their way into the play-offs.

Northwich Victoria are almost assured of their involvement in the end-of-season extras following a 2-1 victory at Brighouse Town.

They held a two-goal lead at the break after Gary Burnett’s brace.

He netted with a diving header in the 20th minute and fired in a right-foot shot from eight yards just nine minutes later.

Brighouse halved the deficit when Ben Atkinson found the bottom corner with an 87th-minute half-volley but it was too little too late, and third-placed Vics now need just one point from their remaining four games to cement a play-off spot.
