Brighouse Town broke the three-figure points tally this season when they won their final game of the campaign.

Paul Quinn’s men bagged a record-breaking 101 to underline their dominance after securing the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division title two games earlier.

Town chairman Ray McLaughlin revealed: “Quinny being Quinny sets little targets for the players throughout the season and even though we had won the league it was no different for him.

“In fact, he had been disappointed that we lost at home to Bridlington Town on Easter Monday.

“We all thought getting over the 100-point mark would be nice but Paul was determined to do it, partly because of the way we lost to Brid over the Bank Holiday.

“We had played well but Brid scored in stoppage time to win 1-0 and I knew that would wind Quinny up.

“We had only been confirmed as champions two days earlier after a win on the Saturday, so everything was still sinking in. But Paul is so focussed and professional that he wanted to win that game as well.”

McLaughlin feels that while his manager still had his sights set on every point, the players may have relaxed. Even subconsciously they may have just allowed themselves to think that the job was done – understandably, the chairman feels.

“From Christmas onwards, we played every midweek and it was high-pressure because all the other clubs had points on the board,” said McLaughlin.

“We were playing catch-up and the other clubs just kept on winning. Tadcaster Albion and Barton Town were setting a cracking pace and Worksop Parramore were up there as well.

“It was as if all of our games were must-win. We didn’t win them all but when we didn’t win we managed to draw and those single points proved to be crucial – and that is down to Quinny’s management skills.”
