Two of last season’s Toolstation Northern Counties East League title contenders go head to head at the Dual Seal Stadium on Saturday.

Brighouse Town host Bridlington Town but there is not as much riding on their Premier Division clashes this term as there was last.

The two clubs slugged it out at the top but were both pipped by champions Scarborough Athletic in a photo finish.

Brighouse could still win the league and the one promotion place this term but they will have to knuckle down.

Consistency has been lacking in Paul Quinn’s squad, and they missed a huge opportunity in midweek.

Town lost 3-0 at fourth-from-bottom Parkgate to leave them in fifth spot.

They still have five games in hand on leaders Barton Town Old Boys and trail by just 11 points, so their situation is retrievable, while Bridlington are below halfway in the table.

Town’s shock Tuesday loss meant Thackley held on to fourth place, and they will be looking to breach the 60-point mark when they host Athersley Recreation this weekend.

The Dennyboys will be striving to reach that landmark against eighth-placed opponents but cannot move into the top three this weekend even with a victory.

Albion Sports spurned the chance to go above both of their neighbours in midweek when they slumped to a 3-0 home defeat.

Kulwinder Sandhu’s men would have climbed above Thackley on goal difference with a win but ended up dropping to seventh as Retford United overhauled them on goal difference.

Albion will be looking to minimise the damage by bouncing back with a home victory over struggling Maltby Main on Saturday.

Eccleshill United also suffered frustration in midweek but only because of the weather as their West Riding County Cup semi-final at home to higher-ranking neighbours Guiseley was postponed.

The fifth-placed Eagles will look to put that disappointment behind them when they travel to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic in Division One.

Eccleshill could displace Pontefract Collieries, who are fourth, with a win at their mid-table hosts and that would keep Lee Duxbury’s men in the hunt for promotion.
