On a day when FA Cup third-round ties and Football League games were postponed, the severe wet weather also decimated fixtures in the lower leagues as five of the nine clubs in the Bradford area were left frustrated.

The biggest local casualty was Guiseley’s trip to Northamptonshire to take on Brackley Town in the Conference North. It was the third time on the trot that the Lions had been denied a league game.

The previous Saturday’s clash with Gainsborough Trinity and New Year’s Day’s return derby against Harrogate Town, both at Nethermoor, had also fallen victim to the stormy conditions.

Lions boss Mark Bower said: “It is very frustrating, especially when all of the other clubs are playing. We will just have to work even harder in training to ensure the players are all ready for next Saturday.”

Guiseley’s next game is an FA Trophy third-round tie at Conference Premier outfit Aldershot Town.

Brighouse Town could have done without their Toolstation Northern Counties East League match being called off.

Town are only halfway through their Premier Division games, with postponements and progress in various cup competitions earlier in the campaign both taking their toll, while most of their promotion rivals have points on the board.

Brighouse were due to host Heanor Town, while Albion Sports’ trip to struggling Lincoln Moorlands Railway and Liversedge’s match at basement dwellers Nostell MW were also called off.

Silsden’s scheduled home game against Ashton Athletic in the North West Counties League top tier was another fixture postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Cobbydalers spokesman Jim Rosser said: “It’s a happy new year so far because we haven’t lost (he NWC League did not have any fixtures scheduled on New Year’s Day).

“The first team were due to be at home and also the reserves, who were supposed to play a West Riding County Cup match on the adjacent pitch. There was no chance of either game going ahead.

“It looked doubtful on Friday evening and we called the first-team game off at 9.30am on Saturday because Ashton were travelling.

“It wasn’t a surprise because we have had a bit of a battering. There are flood waters in and around the village and Steeton had to call their game off as well.”
