THERE were only six scheduled matches on the final day of the Bradford Sunday Alliance League season – but one decided where the Premier Division title would end up.

White Eagles had to beat West Bowling to complete the double of the Bradford & District Cup and also the championship.

Bowling only had to avoid defeat to achieve their own double of lifting the domestic Senior Cup and the league. In the end it was Bowling who won 1-0 in front of a large crowd.

With defences on top, there were no goals in the first half and neither goalkeeper had a shot to save until the 44th minute.

Eagles stopper John Lamb made a great save at the foot of his post, with Michael O'Brien pulling all the strings for Bowling.

The second half opened with both teams going close to breaking the deadlock.

But finally it was the leaders who opened the scoring in the 58nd minute as Andrew Kenyon ran on to a through-ball from Glyn Hurst and beat Lamb with a low shot into the corner.

This proved to be the spur that the home team needed and put the visitors' goal under pressure, with only a superb save in the 80th minute from Tom Carlisle in the Bowling goal keeping out the rampant home forwards.

Bowling survived the pressure and came back into the game and only the woodwork stopped them from doubling their lead.

There were chances at both ends but West Bowling held out to win the title by six points after doing the double over their nearest rivals, thus gaining revenge for the Bradford & District Cup final defeat to White Eagles the previous week at Thackley.

Meanwhile, Division One action saw Bradford Phoenix beat Prospect 5-0.

This result equalled Allerton's 40 points at the top but Allerton had a much superior superior goal difference, although the victory did enable Phoenix to pip Swaine Green for second place by a point.

In Division 1A, Eccleshill needed to beat Junction Wyke to edge out Thornton United Reserves for the title on goal difference.

The first half was goalless but the Eccleshill team rose to the challenge by hitting nine goals without reply after the interval. Terence Hargreaves led the way with five goals and Mathew Hannan added a brace.
