ONLY one West Riding County FA Sunday Cup tie involving a Bradford Sunday Alliance League team and three league matches survived Storm Desmond and the blanket Bradford Council postponements.

League champions Thornton United progressed to the last 16 of the County Cup, and a home tie against Kirk Deighton Rangers on the first weekend in the new year.

However, the match at Thornton Grammar School was close, with United triumphing 5-4 against Leeds City (Rovers), despite leading 4-1 and being in command for 70 minutes.

The hosts' defence was outstanding as they hung on for victory against a fierce onslaught in the closing stages.

Two-goal Dave Wilson won man of the match for United, with further goals coming from Dan Cunningham (2) and Andy Benjamin.

In the league, two of the surviving matches were in the Premier Division, with Bradford Moor and Sandy Lane sharing two points and six goals in another thriller at Dixons Acadamy.

Hosts Moor were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes, thanks to goals by leading scorer Mohammed Ismaeel and a Sultan Khan brace, which included a terrific long-range strike.

However, the visitors pulled a goal back almost immediately on the way to restoring parity.

Both sides had chances to win it, with Moor being thwarted by a tremendous save in the closing minutes.

There was also plenty of goals in the George Hotel v Buttershaw Celtic match, also in the top flight.

Celtic won 7-4, with Lee Smith taking his total to 22 by netting four of the seven, Gareth Stoyles, Nathan Ramsden and Andy Tasker also contributing, but the man of the match award went to Paul Blake, who set up four of the goals.

The only other match was in Division 1A, where third-from-bottom visitors Horse & Groom won 3-2 against second-placed Bradford Vale, the winner coming after a mistake by the home defence.

Vale's goal-scorers were Lewis Witter and Tom Heath.
