WEST Bowling survived two early setbacks to reach the quarter-finals of the West Riding County FA Sunday Cup.

Visitors Seacroft, who had the advantage of a gale-force wind in the first half, were 2-0 ahead within seven minutes but ended up on the wrong end of a 6-3 outcome.

Having controlled midfield, however, Bradford Sunday Alliance League outfit Bowling pulled the score back to 2-2 by half-time.

This followed goals by Damian Melvin (a penalty after Aidan Day had been brought down) and Jordon Hagyard, following a free-kick.

Defending in numbers, Seacroft took a surprise 3-2 lead into the wind but Paul Helliwell equalised after a neat four-man move and Chris Wood, returning after an injury lay-off, then put the Premier Division side ahead for the first time.

It was all Bowling now and substitute Joe Brooksbank, with his first touch, and Wood, who bent a free-kick around the wall, sealed a last-eight tie at home to Belle Isle WMC or Thornton United on Sunday, February 1.

Their rearranged tie is this coming Sunday, as is the all-Alliance clash between Division One leaders Oakenshaw and top-flight Sandy Lane.

However, Peel Park bowed out after being thrashed 10-0 at Dewsbury team St John Fisher Old Boys.

Division 3B leaders Steel Bangle Spartans kept the Alliance flag flying into the fifth round of the West Riding County FA Sunday Trophy with a 3-1 victory over Henry Boons.

But there were last-16 defeats for Station Hotel (3-2 at Walkers Hounds), Lyceum (3-0 at Whitkirk Wanderers) and Mill Lane 2004 (4-1 at AFC Bramley).

There was also some Sunday league action, Swaine Green cementing third place in Division One with a 4-3 victory at second-placed Allerton in poor weather.

Man of the match for the winners was striker Simon McQuiston, who bagged himself a hat-trick, while wide man Elliott Holmes smashed in a trademark free-kick just before half-time.

In Division 1B, mid-table Grass Greener United beat third-placed Great Northern 3-1, with Rob Coulter, Andy Patterson and Matty Regan on the mark for the winners.

Next-to-bottom Turf had a 4-2 victory over Shoulder of Mutton in Division 2A, with Jordan Sargent and Mathew Taylor hitting braces for the winners.

The victory narrows the gap between the clubs to six points but Turf have three games in hand.

Division 2B leaders Thornton United Reserves defeated mid-table Greenwood 4-2 thanks to a brace from Josh Milner and one goal each for man of the match Brad Asquith and Ross Parr.
