THERE was success for Premier Division clubs in the second round of the West Riding County FA Sunday Cup.

But with so many sides entering the competition, it inevitably came at the expense of fellow Bradford Sunday Alliance League teams.

Sandy Lane struggled in the first half of their encounter with lower-ranked Cuedos Rangers Reserves at Harold Park but eventually prevailed 3-0.

Premier outfit Sandy Lane, who were fielding some of their reserves, could not have complained if they had gone into the interval in arrears but the Division 1A hosts lacked finishing power.

It took until the 56th minute for the deadlock to be broken when a well-placed header by Danny Hook deceived the home keeper after a fine cross.

The mid-table Premier Division team were now laying siege to the home side's penalty area and only desperate defending and poor finishing by the visiting forwards kept the score down to one goal.

Finally a 70th-minute free-kick from Marcus Davey doubled the lead, before a through-ball in the last minute found Hook in a one-on-one situation and he beat the home keeper with ease to round off the victory.

It was a spirited performance from the Rangers underdogs but the Premier team's class showed through in the end.

There were no such alarms for West Bowling as they enjoyed a comfortable 9-2 victory at Division 1B opponents Saltaire Rangers, while Peel Park were also convincing 6-2 winners at home to Ryburn United.

Premier Division leaders Stanningley Albion eased through to round three with a 3-0 victory over Byram Munich.

In total there were nine Sunday Alliance League teams who bowed out of the competition as seven survived – including White Eagles, who travelled to Featherstone and came from behind to beat New Sharlston 4-1.

A hard-fought game saw the hosts start much the better team but they only really had one goalbound shot to offer before the interval.

White Eagles were much better in the second half but the home side remained dangerous on the counter-attack and only good defending by Danny Brown and Chris Humphries kept them at bay.

A volley then nudged New Sharlston in front but the Bradford side then made a decisive substitution, with veteran Alec Nesovic coming on and proving the inspiration in a determined fightback.

Jamie Bairstowe grabbed the equaliser after good work by Nesovic and added his second a minute later to edge Eagles in front.

Nesovic rounded off a great cameo performance by making it 3-0, before Bairstowe completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

The victory earned White Eagles a third-round tie against Woodman Batley Carr next month.

Thornton United were much easier winners as they beat Ventus United fromYeadon 10-3, with Josh Milner hitting a hat-trick and Ryan Canning adding a brace for the Premier Division high-fliers.

In the West Riding County FA Sunday Trophy, Mill Lane beat Wakefield opponents King George Reserves 8-1 as Steve Hollingworth scored four times to ensure his side progressed.

There were also a few league fixtures played – including a key match in Division One which saw leaders Allerton just get the better of fellow high-fliers Manningham 6-5 after a thrilling encounter.

Division 1A pace-setters Undercliffe Cricket Club enhanced their position at the summit with a 3-0 victory at relegation-threatened Delius.
