BOLTON Woods and Thornton United met in arguably the match of the day at Canal Road in the second round of the Goals Soccer-sponsored SENIOR CUP.

Woods took an early lead through Dave Wright but Andy Benjamin equalised with a long-range free-kick and Dan Cunningham put the visitors in front before the interval with a well-taken goal. Man of the match Benjamin killed off any hopes of a fightback with his second in the closing stages.

West Bowling gave an impressive display against Buttershaw Celtic at Wibsey, running out 5-0 winners over their Premier Division counterparts. Andy Bailey gave the District Cup holders a 2-0 interval lead and then added another two after the break. Paul Hellawell added a fifth to add gloss to the scoreline.

White Eagles secured a Senior Cup semi-final spot with an impressive 3-1 home win over high-flying Premier Division opponents Peel Park in a third-round tie.

Goals from free-scoring Danny Facey, man of the match Jamie Bairstow and Trinity Brown were just reward for the possession and quality that the home team showed throughout the first half.

Peel Park hit back early at the resumption before Brown came close to adding to his strike with an expertly executed free-kick which kissed the outside of the post with the keeper left stranded.

Peel Park showed some quality throughout the game but Eagles maintained their concentration to earn a last four spot.

Undercliffe Cricket Club continued their fine start to the season by winning a nine-goal thriller against Toller FC which needed extra-time to separate the sides.

Mill Lane came back from a two-goal deficit at the interval to beat Eccleshill Working Men’s Club 3-2 in the INTERMEDIATE CUP third round. Strikes by Steve Hollingworth, Paul Haigh and Mark Consterdine secured them a semi-final berth.

AFC Titans entertained FC Victoria in the second round of the AMATEUR CUP. The home side got off to a blistering start, going in front in the opening seven minutes. There was no further scoring in the first half but the home team hit the woodwork twice and the opposition’s keeper gave an inspired performance.

The hosts started well in the second half, pressing the visitors from the off. A second goal on 55 minutes from Mick Dougan and a header from man of the match Ben Meadhan ten minutes later gave the home team a comfortable lead.

Any chance of Victoria getting back into the tie faded as Dougan hit his second in the 72nd minute and secured his hat-trick eight minutes later.

There was some limited league action, with just one PREMIER DIVISION match played, which saw George United and Sandy Lane share the points and four goals at Bankfoot.
