Two Steve Hollingsworth goals guided Buttershaw White Star to one of the most famous wins in their history as they beat top amateur side Nicosia 3-1 in the FA Sunday Cup.

The Merseysiders have won this competition, recognised as the top Sunday trophy in the country, twice before and White Star were clearly underdogs going into the second-round tie.

This is the first time that White Star, formed in 1999, have been involved for five years but they certainly made up for lost time by dominating the match from the outset.

If it had not been for a superb display by visiting goalkeeper David Potter, the Bradford team could have been well in front by the interval.

Even when Potter was finally beaten, a last-gasp clearance off the line by defender Stephen McCluskie kept the scores level.

The 1991 and 2004 winners did look dangerous on the break but a cool display of handling by Buttershaw keeper Mark Bowers kept them at bay.

Eventually it fell to Hollingsworth to tip the balance in favour of White Star, first with a powerful header after 50 minutes and then by adding his second in the 70th.

A third goal by Ben Kendall made sure of the outcome for the Bradford Sunday Alliance League high-fliers, who could even afford to miss a penalty.

Nicosia, of the Liverpool Business Houses League, pulled a goal back in the closing stages through Graham McCormack but it was never going to affect the outcome.

Another knockout surprise came in the Bradford & District FA Sunday Senior Cup as mid-table Division 1B side Swaine Green knocked out Premier visitors Peel Park 3-2 in an all-Alliance League affair.

The tie sprang to life after a goalless first half when former Bantams player Andy Lee showed great composure to chest down a cross and volley into the net for the hosts.

Park replied almost immediately from an Adam Turner free-kick and appeared in the ascendancy until Lee restored the home side’s lead with his second goal.

Lee then set up strike partner Simon McQuiston, who chipped the onrushing Park keeper to make it 3-1.

The visitors kept pressing, and were rewarded when Turner headed home his second goal, but it was Swaine who booked a quarter-final clash with Cuedos Rangers.

Division One side Cuedos also caused a shock as they brushed aside Premier visitors Thornton United 4-2.

The sides shared four goals in an even first half but the hosts then pulled clear with goals from 17-year-old substitute Jack Hall and Owen Machen with a long-range lob.

West Bowling needed extra time before being able to see off fellow Premier side Wyke Wanderers by the odd goal in seven.

Undercliffe staged a comeback from two goals down but it was to no avail as 1A leaders Wyke Rangers eventually eased past their divisional rivals 5-2.

Dan Penny scored twice for the visitors, with further goals added by Ryan Lloyd, Nathan Johnston and Liam Hainsworth.

There was also plenty of league action and one of the highlights saw Lee Smith and Ben Oagen bag second-half hat-tricks for Division One leaders Buttershaw Celtic as they won 8-1 at second-bottom Ancient Foresters.

Andy Thorpe claimed his second hat-trick of the season as Turf beat Division 2A basement side Bankfoot Lions 4-0.

But Turf were only able to keep their first clean sheet of the season thanks to a superb display by goalkeeper Graham Epton.

Woodland Rovers edged a Division 3B thriller 4-3 at fourth-placed Upper George City thanks to goals by Ashley Smith, Joshua Armitage, Liam Exley and Kieran Barnes.

Grass Greener A won by the only goal of the game against Delius, with Gareth Teasdale the provider.
