Alex Cusack bagged a hat-trick as defending champions Buttershaw White Star showed they are in determined mood to regain the GOALS Senior Cup.

The weekend Bradford Sunday Alliance League programme featured a mixed bag of league and knockout fixtures and White Star’s performance was one of the highlights on a day of big scores.

They brushed aside hosts Stanningley Albion 6-1 in an all-Premier Division clash at Woodhall Park that proved a one-sided affair.

Yet they needed Cusack to be in peak form to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup competition after falling a goal behind.

White Star conceded a penalty inside two minutes but Steve Hollingworth equalised with the first of his brace and although Gareth Carney missed from the spot, the visitors still led 2-1 at the interval thanks to Cusack’s opener.

Cusack went on to complete his treble in the second half, with Hollingworth’s second and Tebohe Mphala’s first goal for the club making it six of the best.

White Star and West Bowling have won two Senior Cups apiece in the last four seasons – but current Premier Division leaders Sandy Lane showed they should not be discounted this time.

They were also in a goal-scoring mood as they hit eight past Division One basement outfit Oakenshaw, who did manage three in reply.

Stuart Cotterill led the way with five of the Lane goals, supported by Michael Cavanagh, Danny Hook and Michael Panter.

A similarly high-scoring all-Division One tie saw Bradford Phoenix get the better of White Eagles 7-4.

A delayed GOALS Intermediate Cup second-round tie proved to be bad-tempered affair on a tricky surface as Beldon Sports won 3-1 at Saltaire Rangers.

The visitors struck first with a penalty from Ryan Frye and they doubled the lead when Dean Burnside tapped in a cross from Frye.

Saltaire dominated the early part of the second half and Danny Taylor’s long-range free-kick reduced the deficit.

But although the hosts kept pressing, they were caught out on the counter-attack when Martin Lee hit home after good approach work with ten minutes to go.

Alexander and visiting Aire Athletic served up a thriller at Peel Park as the Division 1B hosts edged home by the odd goal in 11 after extra time against their Division 2A opponents.

Jamie Kitchen contributed four goals for the winners and their further strikes from Adam Hanson and man of the match Craig Ricketts.
