ECCLESHILL United safely negotiated their way through to the second round of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Cup with a win at Division One rivals AFC Emley.

The Eagles had a couple of early chances, with midfielder Charlie Flaherty sending a shot into the side-netting and a later effort just over the bar, before they broke the deadlock from the penalty spot.

Jonny Irving was fouled inside the area, and Luke Harrop stepped up to convert the 20th-minute penalty.

The hosts had their chances but some good defending and a few good saves from keeper Dom Smith kept the Eagles’ slender advantage intact.

The victory was sealed ten minutes from time when the visitors were awarded a second penalty after Ben Hardy took a tumble in the area.

Antony Brown fired that one home to cement Eccleshill’s place in the second round.

Campion’s home tie against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic was postponed in the afternoon due to a waterlogged pitch at the sportsbulk.com Stadium.

There was also bad news for Albion Sports as they lost 2-1 at home in the Premier Division.

Following a goalless first half, Max Pemberton put visitors Rainworth Miners' Welfare in front just six minutes after the break.

Danny Facey levelled for the Lions with just ten minutes remaining, but just a minute later Matt Sykes restored the visitors’ lead.
