ALBION Sports had a goalkeeping crisis last weekend but it was solved by 16-year-old George Clarke.

Kulwinder Sandhu’s men travelled to Armthorpe Welfare and came back with three points from a 3-1 victory.

The only time Clarke was beaten was from the penalty spot after Steve Mallory had committed a foul.

Sandhu said: “It was a good win but George deserves a special mention because he did really well and had never played at this level before.

“I had a problem with the availability of the other keepers at the club and young George came in and really helped us out.

"He’s the son of Richard, who used to play for me when Albion were in the Sunday League.

“I knew Richard’s lad was a keeper so I rang him and asked if George had a game that weekend, so it all came around by chance really – just because of someone that played for me years ago.”

The younger Clarke was not fazed by his sudden debut appearance in the Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier Division, and was well protected by the Albion defence but did what was necessary when called upon.

Sandhu added: “He didn’t have much to do but he showed a lot of courage and commanded his area.

"He studies in Halifax and plays for Brighouse Town’s development side, so he has a good background in the game.

“My first-choice keeper Kyle Trenerry was injured – he plays for Halifax Town’s under-19 side as well, so plays a lot of football.

"Jack Bentley, Aaron Brian and another keeper that we have signed on were all unavailable for one reason or another. It was just one of those weeks.

“But George did fine and if we need him again we know we can rely on him because if you’re good enough you’re old enough.

"We have five or six teenagers in the side, which is good for the club in the long term as long as the balance is right and you have enough experienced older heads in there as well.”
