TONIGHT'S West Riding County Cup quarter-final derby went to the wire as Bradford Park Avenue beat FC Halifax Town 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after the sides were locked 3-3 at the end of normal time.

A stoppage-time header from Town’s Danny Hattersley had snatched victory from Avenue but then Halifax threw it away twice during the shootout that followed.

Callum Bannister and Adam Dennison both missed penalties which would have seen them go through and, after Ryan Qualter netted for Avenue, Jack Bradley’s miss meant the Horsfall side progressed after both sides had taken eight penalties.

A seesaw game – played at Garforth Town’s ground after the tie had twice been postponed due to the weather – saw Avenue take the lead through Michael Potts but Shaquille McDonald soon levelled.

Hattersley netted on the stroke of half-time but Bradford edged into a 3-2 lead in the second-half with goals from Qualter and Seb Carole, with the Shaymen’s keeper Jordan Porter saving a Potts penalty between the strikes.

Albion Sports beat Parkgate 1-0 in the Northern Counties East Premier Division, Marcus Edwards netting the winner.
