ALBION Sports and Thackley were both winners as the area’s four representatives in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League were all in action on a weather-affected weekend.

Kulwinder Sandhu’s Albion brushed Athersley Recreation aside to run out 3-1 winners at their rented home of Throstle Nest on a freezing cold day in the district.

Conditions were difficult at many of the grounds but the Nest held up well.

Albion were under the cosh early on but edged in front when Marcus Edwards netted his 16th goal of the season, chipping the visitors’ keeper after taking a quick touch when Matt Mathers’ through ball picked him out.

The home side dominated after that but were pegged back on the hour when they failed to deal with a corner, and Jack Owen drilled in from the edge of the area, but two goals in as many minutes put them back in the driving seat.

They trailed for just nine minutes before Mathers got through and dummied his marker before slotting home.

Soon after he turned provider again as his lay-off found Lewis Morgan, who let loose a rocket shot from 30 yards.

Thackley also made the most of home advantage as they returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over struggling Armthorpe Welfare.

The Dennyboys were beaten 4-0 in their previous game – at leaders Tadcaster Albion – but shrugged off that heavy loss to bank a fourth win from their last five games.

Thomas Dugdale’s 12th-minute goal gave the Dennyboys a half-time lead, and a two-goal salvo around the hour cemented a home win, Ryan Farrell netted first and Mike Garrod wrapping up the scoring.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Liversedge played on Friday night and returned from fellow strugglers Nostell MW with a point from a goalless draw.

Eccleshill United held onto 11th place in Division One, despite a 1-0 defeat at lowly Rossington Main.

The Eagles were soaring after three consecutive victories but fell back to earth after Lee Holmes netted Main’s second-half winner.
